So here's what I'm asking from you all - What did you have on your list of things to buy to eat post surgery? What did you have on your list of items for the hospital? What did you wish you'd brought but didnt? What did you bring that just took up space in your overnight bag? Any other helpful hints would be great. Guest guest
Dawn, Thank You So Much! This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I know what you mean about wanting your pillow I have the hardest time sleeping on other pillows ever since my brother spoiled me by buying me some great down pillows when he was working at Bed Bath and Beyond 2 summers ago between college semesters. I'll probably also bring my teddy bear which I normally sleep with. It gives my arms something to hold on to. Plus it'll give me something familiar to hold on to if I wake up in the middle of the night all alone. Jeanie > Hi Jeanie! > > Happy 4th to you also! > > 9 days! Woooo hooooo!!! Plus, vacation! Guest guest
Jeanie- 9 Days...WAHOOOOOOO! Some of the stuff was already covered...but I stayed odorned with the supersize johnny's that they had at the hospital...they are very big, and all I bothered with while I was there (I somehow inadvertantly ended up with 3 of them in my bag when I got home! HMMMM!). I don't have a favorite pillow, so that didn't really mean much to me. Just remember, you'll be sleeping on your back...so if you're not a back sleeper, you will be. A fan is something that I didn't think I'd need since I was going into the brand new wing at the BI/D, but the first thing that I had buy for me while I was there. It's a definate. I brought books, puzzles, a cd player....and used none of them....other than the cd player at night. That's all I can think of at the moment. Guest guest
Hi Jeanie, In response to your questions: What did you have on your list of things to buy to eat post surgery? No sugar added CIB, SF Applesauce, Cream of Tomato and chicken soup, SF Jello, pudding & popsicles, butternut squash, Crystal light, 1% Milk, FF/SF yogurt, oatmeal. What did you have on your list of items for the hospital? bathrobe (did not use), magazines, books, catalogs (did not read), Oil of Olay or Biore facial wipes (best thing I brought), chapstick (needed this), toothbrush, clean undies, hairbrush, hair ties. I did not need books, magazines, etc., or my bathrobe. I really could have gotten along fine with just the facial wipes, chapstick, tooth and hairbrush, and hair ties... You should also probably bring your own shampoo and conditioner, I did not and used the hospital shampoo, no conditioner, my hair was a mess after my one and only shower... Best of luck, Joni

Guest guest
Jeannie- I must agree with the others...Chapstick is another BIGGIE to bring. You get really, really dry, and all you can do is swab your mouth with ice water. The chapstick helped a lot. I'll tell you...on day 2, they said I could have 1 oz of water every hour...I thought I was in heaven. I cherished that damn ounce!!! Talk about things you take for granted!!! So, I'm at day 6 now...and I'm still feeling a little better every day. This morning I finally mastered the art of the " spoon " ...so is officially off the hook(she's so disappointed... RIGHT!!!!). :-) I woke up in almost NO pain...but did take my Roxicet anyway. It keeps me in absolutely no pain for about 5 hours, and like I said yesterday...I'll take no pain over a little pain any day. :-) goes back to work today, and I know she's nervous about leaving me at home. I know I'll be fine. I've done everything by myself that I will have to...get drinks, take pills, go to the bathroom, etc. My mom is off the rest of the week, so she's going to spend some time here today and tomorrow, plus there's usually a fairly steady stream of people popping in to say HI. I think my mom and I are going to walk out in the yard today...baby steps! :-) I had to tell my landlord not to panick if he sees an ambulance in the yard. Some of my pals stop by in the ambulance on their way back into town from the hospital! Although he should be used to it by now...there always seems to be an ambulance in the yard for one reason or another anyway. :-) Well...hope you all had a good 4th. Enjoy the rest of your week. Guest guest
Jeff, So glad you finally mastered the spoon! I bought a pack of 2 wooden spoons...I obviously threw away the " buttwiper " , but now every time I make sauce, I have to use a different spoon! Makes me sick just thinking about it! Baby steps are BIG steps to a healthier you! Every lil bit helps! Take care, and don't overdue it even when you have little/no pain. Guest guest
thanks alice....i'm sure watching everyone eat will be hard, but since only a select few know i'm having wls, i won't be able to give an explanation as to why i'm not digging into the mac salad, and chips and dips etc....or having a few cocktails...it all depends on how i'm feeling if i even go, but i'll be ok ....i'll just say i just had my gallbladder out and i need to watch my diet very very carefully....i just had knee surgery 2 weeks ago monday, and it killed me to stay in the house for 5 days... i just started driving a few days ago... i was going stir crazy... crossing my fingers there will be no complications and i will have a quick and easy recovery.. kim
Guest guest
Kim, DonÃt worry... everything will be fine. A party at 2 weeks should be fine, too. Just beware that watching everyone eat will be VERY tough emotionally. (at least it was for me). Also, if everything goes normally, you will have a great time on your vacation. I was up and walking from day one, and could pretty much do everything for myself. I went to the movies after my 4th or 5th day home, so, yes, you will be able to get out of the house as soon as you feel up to it. I had pain that lasted longer than others, so I couldnÃt drive for 2 and a half weeks, but most people start sooner. - AA kiimm2@... wrote: > hi joanie, > omg... only 7 more days till i have the surgery... i am getting really > > nervous...i keep thinking who am i to chance this operation when i > have 4 > beautiful kids who need me...i understand the rewards it will bring > me.. > healthier life and a better quality of life too...but i keep thinking > what if > something happens and i don't make it...from reading everyones > responses i > know this is normal, but it's so scary....being seperated is hard > enough and > i didn't tell my ex....he thinks i'm having my gallbladder removed, so > he'll > be with the kids...this week i'll get all my things i need for when i > come > home from he hospital...question? how long were you really stuck in > the > house, unable to do things?? how long till i can drive? i have a big > party on > the 28th of july (a little over 2 weeks after surgery)...think i'll be > able > to attend?? also going on vacation 2nd week in aug...to beach...a full > month > later...think it's a good idea????seems like it was ages ago when i > went in > for my first consult (jan) and i waited so long for this day to come > and now > i'm shaking in my pants...thank god for all the postings everyone > writes...makes me a bit wiser, ans certainly makes me laugh....i never > knew i > was going to need a wooden spoon to wipe LOL ....i know i'm rambling > on but i > just needed to vent a bit... talk to you soon... > kim > >

I had pain that lasted longer than others, so I couldnÃt drive for 2 and a half weeks, but most people start sooner. - AA kiimm2@... wrote: > hi joanie, > omg... only 7 more days till i have the surgery... i am getting really > > nervous...i keep thinking who am i to chance this operation when i > have 4 > beautiful kids who need me...i understand the rewards it will bring > me.. > healthier life and a better quality of life too...but i keep thinking > what if > something happens and i don't make it...from reading everyones > responses i > know this is normal, but it's so scary....being seperated is hard > enough and > i didn't tell my ex....he thinks i'm having my gallbladder removed, so > he'll > be with the kids...this week i'll get all my things i need for when i > come > home from he hospital...question? how long were you really stuck in > the > house, unable to do things?? how long till i can drive? i have a big > party on > the 28th of july (a little over 2 weeks after surgery)...think i'll be > able > to attend?? also going on vacation 2nd week in aug...to beach...a full > month > later...think it's a good idea????seems like it was ages ago when i > went in > for my first consult (jan) and i waited so long for this day to come > and now > i'm shaking in my pants...thank god for all the postings everyone > writes...makes me a bit wiser, ans certainly makes me laugh....i never > knew i > was going to need a wooden spoon to wipe LOL ....i know i'm rambling > on but i > just needed to vent a bit... talk to you soon... > kim > >
Guest guest
Kim, RELAX! LOL! I know how hard it is, but you thought this through for a long time, chose this tool to help YOU and nobody else. Not one person can explain to someone unless experiencing WLS how such a person feels. I have a few words to describe me....BASKET CASE, but POSITIVE when researching this. Once I made the decision, it was for ME, and I knew this was my last option, and once I went through major surgery, there ain't NOTHING STOPPING me! I just realized yesterday for the very first time in my life, this is the longest I've ever kept weight off, and have it still come off! I have also recognized myself as a more motivated person with better esteem (not the best, but definitely better), healthier when making my food choices, and constantly having my MIND working BEFORE I eat anything. There's not one time since surgery I haven't thought about what I've eaten, although I must admit even when they weren't the best choices, I sometimes still went and ate it. I don't consider this as a bad thing, but a treat and being human. I can eat just about anything, minus the high sugars/fat, but in great moderation. On every diet fad I've been on, I could continue to eat AFTER the moderation stopped, because my belly wasn't any different than it was before WLS. Now, I can't physically eat what I was once able to, therefore my mind and belly finally have a one-on-one relationship for once in my life! I LOVE IT! Let your ex think whatever he wishes, or you wish to tell him. That's a personal decision YOU have made, and I give you credit! Just wait til he starts noticing and asking a zillion and one questions! Good luck! Dawn Re: 9 more days - Shopping lists and preparation lists hi joanie, omg... only 7 more days till i have the surgery... i am getting really nervous...i keep thinking who am i to chance this operation when i have 4 beautiful kids who need me...i understand the rewards it will bring me.. healthier life and a better quality of life too...but i keep thinking what if something happens and i don't make it...from reading everyones responses i know this is normal, but it's so scary....being seperated is hard enough and i didn't tell my ex....he thinks i'm having my gallbladder removed, so he'll be with the kids...this week i'll get all my things i need for when i come home from he hospital...question? how long were you really stuck in the house, unable to do things?? how long till i can drive? i have a big party on the 28th of july (a little over 2 weeks after surgery)...think i'll be able to attend?? also going on vacation 2nd week in aug...to beach...a full month later...think it's a good idea????seems like it was ages ago when i went in for my first consult (jan) and i waited so long for this day to come and now i'm shaking in my pants...thank god for all the postings everyone writes...makes me a bit wiser, ans certainly makes me laugh....i never knew i was going to need a wooden spoon to wipe LOL ....i know i'm rambling on but i just needed to vent a bit... talk to you soon... kim

Guest guest
Just one thing I haven't seen mentioned that would have helped me: a backscratcher. I had an allergic reaction to the morphine, itched all over, and in the middle of the night my iv came out with all the scratching. Best wishes and see you on the other side.
