Not really, or maybe I should say, not necessarily. There's more to foam and

bubbles than just protein. You really can't tell much just by looking at it.

Not necessarily. You cannot tell what the level of protein spill is just

from the foam. The only sure way to tell is having lab analysis. There have

been times when my foam level has been really high, yet the lab analysis showed

lower protein. Go figure! In fact, when my protein level was up to 10 grams,

the foam was not very bad.

Sorry I can't offer more information than my personal experience, but hope it

helps.

Many people get foamy urine now and then without having kidney disease

without even noticing it. It can happen simply because there are certain

proteins in meats that don't get broken down completely in digestion, and

these exit the body in the urine. Morning urine is particularly susceptible

to this, because it's very concentrated. Other things that can cause foamy

urine are gallbladder and bile problems.

Foam is a little like blood in the urine. You can't really judge how much

blood is in urine by looking at it even if it's cola-coloured, and you can't

really judge proteinuria by the amount of foam in the urine. Maybe sometimes

you can, but it's not usually a reliable indicator.

Had to comment on the urine foam thing. When I had my son tested for urine

protein he came out of the lab bathroom with his cup of urine and it looked

like foam on a mug of beer. It really had me concerned. However, the urine

test was negative for protein.

Now for another question, How is it possible to be spilling protein and not

blood. I have always tested in the large catagory for blood in urine. The

last few times it has been negative for blood but positive for protein.

I feel like such a fair weather friend. I haven't been around much lately.

I am still recoverying from Luke's sixth grade year. Levi is still not

feeling great but he is getting some better.

Hi ,

Well, most people with IgAN, once diagnosed, may never again see a urine

test result that doesn't show blood, but I guess it's possible it might

happen now and then. It's certainly possible to have proteinuria without

blood. It's possible to have just orthostatic proteinuria, without kidney

disease, and it really doesn't mean anything. There are some kidney disease

where the primary feature IS proteinuria. I imagine that if someone with

suspected IgAN who has NOT had a biopsy showed no blood in the urine

consistently, I would be thinking maybe another kind of kidney disease.

Hi ,

Fair weather friend is the last thing I'd call you! is routinely

negative for blood despite having slightly elevated urine protein This was

true even when he was spilling a moderate amount of protein (but not when he

was doing massive spills). I think the mechanisms are very different.

Proteinuria involves membrane permiability and hematuria might involve other

factors. I'm fuzzy on specifics here, so don't quote me.

Sounds like you've had your hands full with L and L. I winced when you said

" recovering from 6th grade " . I remember how completely disasterous 's

6th grade was! I hope Luke's recovery is as equally swift.

Cy,

Thanks for the information. I like to think that a negative for blood means

things are improving. Maybe not but I believe in positive thinking.

As for as sixth grade- it is one of those things that people tell you is a

rough adjustment period but of course I thought " how hard can it be " Well, I

was counting the days to summer along with Luke. It was especially difficult

because Luke had attended a year round school before and was not used to the

schedule.

I realized today that I missed everyone here. I promised myself I would make

more time to check in.

PS I started training for my blackbelt again. After being so sick last year

it was difficult to find the motivation to get in shape again. I am shooting

for November.
