Really? I was told it was okay to breastfeed again after anywhere from

24-72 hours.

Take care, Fay

P.S. About bugleweed and ATD's : I've come across a few people who are

using both. Aren't they mutually excusive, unless your medical/naturopath

professional is monitoring both? It's like multiplying the dose of the

ATD's.

NO! You can't take this test while breastfeeding and it is sometimes

mistakenly given. I had to actually sign something legal at the Mayo clinic

swearing that I was not breastfeeding before I took the test.

Sadly, my sister-in-law was given this test while nursing. Nobody asked her

if she was nursing; the people just gave her the radioactive material. She

drank it and promptly went home to nurse her baby who she'd been away from

for a long time because of the doctor appointment. She remains sick about

this and furious at their error.

The uptake test is not the only way to diagnose Graves. An ultrasound and

complete thyroid panel can do the job.

Your doc's right, don't panic yet. It could just be post-partum thyroiditis

(PPT). This can cause temporary hyperthyroidism after pregnancy. If it is

PPT, it usually only lasts a couple months at most. It's usually treated

with antibiotics or sometimes anti-inflammitories. It can, however, exist at

the same time with GD, so based on the TSH alone, it's hard to tell which it

is. If your doc orders a radioactive iodine uptake scan (don't know if that

can be done while you're breastfeeding), a low result will indicate PPT,

while a high result indicates GD. Hope this helps - try not to worry yet

(easier said than done!)

Fay,

Perhaps there is disagreement among doctors. My primary endo said

breastfeeding precluded one from the radioactive uptake and at the Mayo

Clinic, they specifically asked about breastfeeding and had me sign two

forms: one that said I was not pregnant and the other that said I was not

breastfeeding.

Ok, if we're naming names here a satellite office of Wm. Beaumont

Hospital, Royal Oak MI, told me that I shouldn't be pregnant if I was

having the test but that it would be alright to resume nursing after 24

hours.

Take care, Fay

I was told absolutely no RAI if breastfeeding also. Only if the baby would

take a bottle and I pumped off milk for three days. I got my first RAI

after I weaned my baby. I.
