Hi Pierre,

Lemonade is one of my favorite summertime drinks, so it is good it is low in

potassium. I make my own at home too since my Mother-in-law always brings me

bags of lemons off her tree.

I don't know. By the time a cola gets to your kidneys, it's just blood.

Phosphorus in drinks and food is something that has to be limited in the

diet of people with more advanced chronic renal insufficiency because

phosphorus binds to readily with calcium, that having elevated blood levels

of phosphorus gradually sucks the calcium out of your bones - eventually

leading to a kind of osteoporosis. It's something that happens over a long

period of time, years even. I don't think one Coke or Pepsi is that much

phosphorus by itself. There are people who do have very bad pain in the

kidneys or the kidney area, but nobody really knows why this happens, and,

thankfully, most people with IgAN don't have that. Cola's are kind of acidic

though. Could the pain be more from your digestive system, perhaps even some

kind of pancreatic colic. I sometimes get that when I drink coffee,

especially on an empty stomach. Physiologically, the part of the kidneys

that filters blood (and that is affected by IgAN) doesn't have any nerves

that feel or transmit pain.

As I've posted many times in the past, I once had very bad pain that I swore

was my right kidney. It turned out I was having gallbladder attacks.

Thanks for the reply. The pain is on both sides, favors my left side more and it

is high about right where they did my bio. I only get it when I drink pop

though, so I'm at a loss. again thanks for the info it has helped.

Well, at least if you know what causes it, you can just drink something else

:)

If you ever progress to more advanced renal insufficiency, you won't be able

to drink cola anyway because of the phosphorus.

Pains like this remain somewhat of a mystery. As I said, nobody really knows

why some people with IgAN get flank pain, and others don't, nor what the

mechanism is that actually causes it.

Have your tried cranberry cocktail? It's a very popular choice among people

who are on a low potassium renal diet. They always have some where I go for

dialysis. Lemonade is good too, as, contrary to what we might assume since

it's citrus, it's low in potassium. Both are fine phosphorus-wise also.

There's a new lemonade out that I tried a few days ago, and I just love it.

It's called Tropicana Twister. At home, I just make my own, though.

Hi Poneyboy,

I am afraid that a generalized diet for IgAN really needs to be tailored

according to your specific laboratory results. For 15 years, I had no potassium

restrictions, but now I run very high and have sever restrictions. In general,

most IgAN patients do have to watch protein consumption (thus the advise to

get off Atkins) and low sodium. It really is a good idea to consult your

doctor before altering your diet though.

I am so sorry you have had such bad luck with Nephrologists. I hope you can

find a good one who is more compassionate soon.

I actually still have a Coke now and then. My phosphorus numbers are always

good, and they check them monthly since I've been on dialysis. After a

while, you get to know what you can cheat on and what you can't. I like

other dark soft drinks too, like Dr. Pepper and Bark's root beer. I have no

idea how these measure up in terms of phosphorus though. I like spruce beer

whenever I can find it too, but it's pretty rare nowadays.

When we make lemonade we also make our own so we know what we are drinking. I

did not know potassium caused any trouble for the kidneys. when I was dx my neph

doctor did not tell me anything to look out for except to come off the Atkins

diet. soon after seeing me for a few visits moved to new England, she gave me to

the meanest doctor in the world. he was so mean I don't see how he had any

patients. so I quit going to him and started letting my regular doctor do my 24

hour. I have not been to a neph in about 3 years. I can't find any good ones

around where I live and I have to drive over 100 miles just to see the mean one.

I would like to know all the diet restrictions for IgAN that I should know. my

wife told me when I first got dx that she thought my neph doctor was scattered

brain and not with it. she did my bio and took out 3 samples then she let a

student wanting to become a neph take a sample and I thought he killed me, the

pain killer did not do a good job, and I screamed my head off and cried. so my

wife thought she was a bad doctor. I have not had good experiences with neph

doctors. I would like to find another one that is nice and good.

My current diet is no raw sugar, fructose or stevia,a no red meat at all. a few

sweets not many a pop a day, lots of fish and fruits and vegies. tea, lemonade,

sobe drinks, juice, milk, I also take fish oil, vit e, vit c, vit b complex,

altace, lamictal, risperdal. Please tell me what I need to change or add. I want

my kidneys to last as long as possible.

Crystal,

I knew you were a soul sister! Unfortunately, where and I live,

lemons grow on trees. I always wondered who bought them in grocery stores!

Unfortunately, the ultimate price tag involves living in California. Lemons

might be ALL that's free here!
