Shay, according to my doc (PCP), you can't get it more than once. You test

positive for it -- and I certainly FELT as if I had mono again -- but my

understanding is that true relapses are exceptionally rare. It might be

that you had FM before you knew you had FM, you know what I mean? I can't

really feel much difference, myself, between mono and FM. I thought I

relapsed 4 times after that first bout, but evidently two of the four

markers in the blood tests done for mono suggest otherwise. I'm not a

scientist, so can't explain how the markers work, but if two of the four

are low, it indicates that while you have Epstein-Barr virus in your

system, you do not actually have active mononucleosis.

The similarities I've encountered over the past year and a half -- the

mono, the lactic acid burn in my muscles, and their similarities to FM --

leave me with so many questions, and I'm not even finding on the internet

or questioning professionals, anything about research being done on a

possible connection in these areas. Could Epstein-Barr be a factor in

FM? It is a ferocious virus to begin with; it's not a stretch to believe

that it could cause lingering, even life-long, problems. Do the muscles of

FM sufferers simply not break down lactic acid?

Em

I have a good friend that has the Epstein-Barr and also has fibro. I don't

know that this proves that the two are compatibility.

I've never heard anyone mention the Epstein-Barr virus in connection

with FM. If anything, it's usually associated with CFS, although they

still all don't agree with it being the cause or associated definitely

with the CFS. I've never had mononucleosis. I have heard the theory

that FM sufferers don't break down lactic acid as well because of the

poor sleep cycles. Even so, for either disease, many people who don't

have either FM or CFS carry the Epstein-Barr virus with them in their

bodies and have absolutely no sign anything is wrong with them. I'm not

sure science is close to an answer with this one.

If you are serious about a poll, you will need to get the questions together

and send the poll to Bierman. She is the owner of this list and she

would have to approve the idea and tell you where to post the list of

questions.

Absolutely right, and to my knowledge *everyone* carries the E-B virus; it

just isn't activated in a lot of people. I'm just throwing out ideas for

discussion, that's all. It's driving me nuts that I do not know why I have

this, and my doctor doesn't know why -- no one knows why. I just find

myself questioning all kinds of things -- like, " I had X, wonder if that

had any bearing on this, " and so on.

I mean, maybe we could do a poll. What diseases have we all had?

allergies, medical procedures, hereditary problems, family histories, that

sort of thing. Consider ourselves some kind of control group. What we'd

do with that information, I don't know, but maybe we could find out if we

have other things in common besides FM?

Sorry to be so rabble-rouser-y. I'm kind of like a bulldog sometimes on

these things.

Hi,

It is possible for epstein-barr virus and mono to re-occur several times. I

have experienced chronic epstein-barr and relapses for several years. A

person can have relapses if they have a low immune system or under extreme

stress. I have found documentation on this fact.

Now I have FM/CFS, meniere's disease, and experience seizures.

Yes I was diagnosed with The Epstein-Barr virus just last year, I'm 31 years

old and my doctor said I have had Mono since my child hood in my blood

stream. Could this be a connection with Fibro? Also a Positive Epstein-Barr

means Chronic Fatigue Syndrome according to my doctor. Thank You Pamm

Pamm: There is a definite link between CFS and

Epstein-Barr. I had Mono when I was 17 and ever since

then I have been ill with CFS. I also test positive

and have an extremely high titer for EBV. -Lynne

They aren't the same thing, but some people feel that the Epstein-Barr

virus causes CFS in some people who have it. Others don't agree at all

and point out that many people who don't have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

have the Epstein-Barr virus antibodies in their blood. It is often

linked with CFS, but they aren't the same thing.
