Hi ,

My Neph just always tells me to keep it in the fridge so I double bag it and

put it in the garage fridge. I would not want to put it in the kitchen fridge

with all the food though.

I'm not sure how long it's o.k. to leave it but couldn't you just set your

alarm and start tomorrow morning? Set it for around the time you expect to

leave for the lab on Monday, get up Sunday am and start the test at the

time you expect to need to leave on Monday (you can always head back to bed

after you pee), then you will complete the test just before you head out

Monday morning. It's what I do when I need to do my 24hr collections. Just

a thought....unless there is a reason you can't do the collection on Sunday.

That's what I usually do, my husband was encouraging me to start tonight so

it wouldn't be a nuisance while I have to go out and do home visits

tomorrow. I told him I'd have to find out if it would alter the results of

the test. I also told him it probably wouldn't make a difference or

inconvenience me any less, because the visits are scheduled for the early am

and then around 4 p.m. and it would still fallwithin the 24 hrs even if I

started right now. I think I'll just do it as I originally planned. Thanks

for responding, Amy.

Unless I happened to have a day off or something, I always timed my 24 hour

urine collections to be done on Sunday, to be brought in on Monday morning.

For one thing, I'm pretty sure they need to draw blood in relation to it

when you bring it in, plus, I'm not exactly sure what it was for, but I

always had to also give a spot urine sample at the lab when I brought the

collection in. It's been almost 2 years since I last had to do one of those,

so I don't remember for sure. Once you're on dialysis, you don't do urine

collections.

Even without that, leaving it an extra day might let bacteria grow and

contaminate the collection somehow. I remember one time when my collection

did get contaminated with bacteria for some unknown reason, and I had to

redo it.

Thanks, Pierre. No way would I want to have to start all over again. It's

a pain in the you -know -where already. Surprisingly enough, I sure do have

to go to the bathroom a lot for someone with (or even without) kidney

disease. When I'm doing my 24 hr urine, I don't like to be away from the

house any more than 2 hrs at a time. It's a sure bet I'll have to go, if I

get stuck out and about somewhere-'s law.

I've posted this in the past a few times, but, if the rest of the family

really objects to having a jug of urine in the fridge, along with the apple

juice and the milk, one thing you can do is to just keep it in the bathroom,

on a bed of ice (like in a little wide plastic tub). That's what they the

few times I was hospitalised and had to do a 24hr urine collection. Once, I

just left it in the bathroom, on the cool tile floor, and it was fine. One

advantage is that, since you see it there when you go to the bathroom,

you're less likely to forget part of the collection :)

Pierre, that's exactly what I do I put it in a little ice chest, with ice of

course, and keep it in the bathroom. I'd hate to go back and forth to the

refrigerator every time I had to pee (pardon my French, there.) Especially

in the middle of the night.

This discussion reminds me of a funny event from 10 years ago or so. My

son had been recently diagnosed with IgAN and was having to do 24 hr.

urine collections periodically. We have an old refrigerator in the

basement, and I suggested he keep the " big brown jug " down there. Later

his younger brother came running up the stairs to announce with horror

that was peeing in the refrigerator. Turned out instead of taking

the jug to the downstairs bathroom, figured no one was going to

see him and was just opening the door each time he needed to go and

peeing directly into the jug in the refrigerator.
