Personally, I'd call the doc. I was lucky as my pain only lasted for about

15 seconds, then nothing ever again. But I was lucky, it can't hurt to call.

Hi Kristi,

I had my second biopsy on a Friday, so I had the weekend to recover. I was fine

by Monday. If you do not feel better in a couple more days, I would call your

Neph just to be on the safe side.

I hope you can rest and feel better.

I needed a second biopsy because the first one 10 years earlier did not have a

good tissue sample and therefore they were unable to get a good diagnosis. The

second one was because I began a period of decline after 20 or so years of

stability, so my Neph thought it wise to be certain it was IgAN.

Both of mine put me out of commision for about 2 weeks each. I was

inform no major lifting for the first week or two. Not sure if that

helps; but I agree with the others if this doesn't feel right call

the doctor it can't hurt.

Didn't they tell you to take it easy for a few days, and didn't they

prescribe a pain killer? Even a desk job stresses the incision area, when

you're sitting in the chair and doing things with your arms. It IS an

incision you have there, and a rod was pushed right through you muscles and

other tissues on the way to the kidney. It's not unusual to need some

painkillers, but if they don't work, then there's no loss in calling the

doctor's office.

I don't know how you guys do it these days with the in today out today

biopsies. I think that's for the benefit of the budget more than for the

patient. When I had mine just a little over 10 years ago, it still required

an overnight hospital stay, with monitoring of vitals by the nurses. I have

to say mine didn't hurt much after, though. I really had no problems at all,

but I did have access to a painkiller - which I don't recall I had to use. I

think it was simply a prescription acetominophen (Tylenol) with codeine type

of medication.

Glad you're feeling better.

I called the doc yesterday. They said the pain level wasn't normal, but it

wasn't unheard of . . .

Stayed in bed for another day and am feeling almost normal. :-)

Hi Kristi:

After my biopsy last October, I was in a lot of pain for about 2 days, but soon

after it subsided. I was out of work about 3 days total, I think. Rita

Kristi I'm glad you are feeling better. I know I was on full bed rest for a

24 hours after my biopsy but I was admitted into the hospital for it. When

I got out I was put on no lifting for 2 weeks and limited movement for a few

days...my b/p was running very high when I had mine done though so my neph

didn't want me to start bleeding. I had mild pain in the area for about a

week, not enough to really need to take pain meds for but enough to raise my

b/p if I didn't take pain meds.

Take it easy and let your body heal, remember you just had a piece of it

removed.

I had my gallbladder out in 1996 (now that's real surgery, not just a puny

kidney biopsy). I went in at 9am, and I was home before supper. Later in the

evening, the incision on my side started to bleed - rather profusely, I

thought. I was dripping all over.

It was a little scary. So, I phoned the nurse at the number I was given, and

she said, " Oh, that happens all the time. Just hold it til it stops " . No

need to panic, apparently :)

Same thing with my fistula surgery. For that, which, after all, involves

quite a bit of cutting and sewing in there, I was on my way home within 30

minutes after the surgery. No problems though.

So, I guess if you go home after such a short time for those kinds of

things, it would be pretty hard to justify admitting everyone overnight just

for a needle biopsy.

in the hospital over night. It was a real pain in the butt, but I would

rather be there with trained proffesionals making sure that I was all right.

I don't understand why some let you go home. They wouldn't even let me sit

up more than a 40 degree angle and wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom, but

other places will let you go home? That doesn't make sense! Jill H.
