I ignored her, but my baby recently had an ear infection and now I'm slightly paranoid. I am interested in knowing about this also, laying down is the only way that I nurse now, when was a small baby I used the football hold because I am so large breasted and now that she is bigger (9 months) it is the most comfortable way for us to nurse. She has never had an ear infection, thank goodness. But I too am curious. Guest guest
Suzanne, I don't think that nursing lying down would play a significant role in increasing the risk of ear infections. Some bf babies are still prone to ear infections, despite that bfing is supposed to lower the incidence of ear infections. Also some ff babies don't get ear infections. My daughter and I enjoy nursing lying down too. It is the reason I get enough sleep to keep up with my DS of 2 yo. For the baby lying beside us vs lying in our arms, the head position while nursing is almost the same. Sometimes I vary on this, and lay DD across my chest, so that my let-down is against gravity and easier on her. I would vote that you nurse as is comfortable for you and your DD and avoid other nuisances that can contribute to ear infections--smoke, day care settings, to name a few. Guest guest
>for my first question. Can nursing lying down contribute to ear infections? Breastmilk actually has antibodies to hinder growth of bacteria, so it's not likely that the breastmilk pooled in her ears and caused an infection. Some babies get stuffy noses that never seem to fully develop into colds, but do end up as ear infections. I've recently discovered that the climate you live in has a positive influence on ear infections. Since we've moved to an island, I've battled ear infections for the last two years when I've never had one before in my life. If you use humidifiers, that could be the culprit. Or perhaps she's getting bathwater in her ears.
Guest guest
Suzanne, Nursing a baby lying down puts the baby in the same position as if you were nursing in the cradle hold. The baby is lying down to nurse either way. Ear infections in exclusively breastfed children are often a result of a food allergy. It could also just be a fluke. My son got one ear infection while nursing and it was a cold that really clogged up my ears and just couldn't drain from his. I have never heard that nursing a baby lying down contributes to ear infections and honestly it just doesn't make sense to me. I think this comes from babies that are formula fed and prone to ear infections it is best to bottle feed them semi-upright. But that is a very different scenario. Guest guest
I also forgot to mention in my previous post that ear infections are often caused by a physical barrier to ear drainage that can be relieved by chiropractic.
