I know exactly how you feel!!! My doctor tryied to push me to introduce

cereal and solids to the girls at 4 months also. He made me feel like if I

didn't I would starve my children. But this is also the same doctor that

told me at the gilrs 9 month check up that it was time to stop nursing cause

it was gross!. Needless to say I changed doctors. The girls didn't start

eating any solid foods until they were 10 months and by that time they had

already tripled their birthweight so itwasn't like they were hurting for

food. I also had a iron test done to show the doctor that just because I was

nursing doesn't mean they were anemic and sure enough their iron level was

perfectly normal. YOu are doing a great job and have made the right

decision! YOur baby is doing just fine on mommy milk! Take care!

Yeah I am not starting my 5 month old on solids until she is over 6 months.

I am not even going to give her cereal but make my own food for her at home.

Good for you, my doctor would tell me I 'could' start solids/juice if I

wanted to, but made it clear it was up to me and that my babies were doing

just fine on breastmilk alone. Trust your instincts! Mine didn't get

anything till 6 months either and I have the best eaters that I know of,

they will eat absolutely anything and plenty of it.

BTW, my oldest dd is named Rebekah (she's 11) and youngest son is named

(he's 6)

At least you have the knowledge to ignore the new Dr!! Maybe you should send

him (or take to your next appt) the current AAP recommendations! (6 months

or later!)

This was exactly where my first pediatrician was. I loved that doctor. But

moving does this to one.

Isn't it funny how names repeat like this?

I know, if this had been my doctor the first time around, my son would have

started cereal tonight (and the doctor would have been much happier.)

I talked to DH tonight, and told him that I am going to write a letter to

the doctor. I plan to put in some information for him to study as well.

>>and Jodi,

I wish I could change doctors, but our health plan ties us into using the

staff physicians at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. If we need a

doctor on a day that Dr. M. doesn't see patients we will see someone else,

but I feel like maybe it is my duty as an experienced BFing mom to educate

this fellow so that he does better by the next bfing mom who doesn't have my

experience.

Thanks, Ladies,

You are just what I needed to feel a lot more positive as I go to sleep

tonight.

GOOD FOR YOU!!

My son was strictly breast fed until he was 6 1/2 half months. He then

started very slowly on little bits of homemade cereal mixed with breastmilk.

He then had homemade veggies and fruits and then onto grains. He is now

almost 11 months old and is still nursing 4-5 times per day and is eating a

wide variety of homemade foods. I have a little baby food grinder that I

use and I also make large portions of food for him and then use the food

processor and freeze it. It's a little bit more work but it's worth it.

Mikayla goes in for her 4 month check up tommorrow, I hope her DOC does not

tell me to introduce solids this early. I know he gives the floride drops

at 6 months, which I wil not use on my baby. i never used them n my other

son either, I tried telling the Doc I would not use them, but he gives me

the prescription anyway, and I throw it in the garbage:-)

Amy,

We just had Sam for his 4 mo. checkup on Thursday. When we had him for

his 2 mo. checkup the Dr. said I could start giving him juice. This

time he said I could start cereal. I don't think he is even physically

ready for it - I thought they had to be able to sit up and not have the

" tongue thrust " before solids. He weighed 12-8, he was 7-2 at birth -

not a big baby. I haven't given him juice yet either - what do you guys

all do during these hot summer months - do you offer anything else to

drink other than bm?

my litle chunk is almost tripling her birth weight at 4 months:-) But she

still only nurses every 3 or so hours, and sleeps 8-10 hours at night. she

does stare at our food, but she shows no real signs of needing anything but

breastmilk.

When I had my first one, I was told at 4 months he wasn't gaining well

enough and had to start giving him food.

When I had my third (different doc) the nurse told me that i *HAD* to supplement

or switch to formula - I was in tears but did not follow her advice *thank

goodness*. She was gaining, but not as much as they wanted.

With my 4th (another doc), he wanted me to feed him mashed potatoes at

3 mos!!! I let that one go in one ear and out the other lol.

A breastfed baby doesn't really need anything else but breastmil even in the

summer. Breastmilk is 80% water anyway
