Subject: where do i start?

wow, i have been reading through alot of celiac info and can see that

there is gluten in things i would have never expected to find it in.

we will not be starting a GF diet until after my daughter has her

biopsies done, so i have a little more time to research---but not

much. is there some sort of guide to warn of unexpected plaaces gluten

might be? i have seen people refer to gf beauty products---is this a

problem too?! i can see where gluten in lip gloss would be a problem---

but what about other make-up, lotion etc.? where do i start???

bridget, my daughter is 14 1/2 years old and has an identical twin

sister. her sister actually just had an endo 2 months ago, but for

another reason other than looking for celiac. my twins are small,

but in the last year or 2 one of them has grown noticeably more than

the other---i just never thought much of it because almost all my

kids are small. she has rashes all over, so i had taken her to an

allergist---since i had read about dermatitis herpetiformis, i made

sure to point out to the allergist where her rashes were located-----

i think it about killed her to have to show him her behind. my 10

yr old daughter is also extremely thin (my sister said she looks

like an ehiopian child) and has had a lot of rashes. i have a

friend with celiac and she has been after me for awhile to get

myself tested because i have fibromyalgia. do i want to go ahead

and have all of my children screened, or should i wait? i have 9

children ages 22, 20, 16, 14, 14, 10, 8, 6, 2. my 2 oldest have had

some intestinal trouble similar to irritable bowel. my odest was

nauseated and throwing up for over a year with no explaination. my

20 year old has been getting bouts of the runs and nausea.

I'd get the one with the skin rashes tested by a dermatologist. Diagnoseing DH is a noninvasive test. If that's neg. - find a good peds GI doc. Anyway, once you have a positive dx of celiac in one child, the others should most definilty be test (the odds of having celiac when a first degree relative has been diagnosed are 1:10 - 1:12). With one positive dx, you shoudn't have any problem getting the others referred. After my positive biopsy, a phone call to my family practice doc was all it took to get a referral for my teenagers.

Hi , Test, test, test! I know of a family of five, all of whom are celiacs! All it takes is a blood test to get the ball rolling. You can check on celiac.com to find exactly which tests to ask for, if your doctor is like most doctors and has virtually no knowledge of CD. CD often hides behind IBS. Just think of how relieved you will be once you have some answers behind all these CD-sounding symptoms! Good luck!
