I'm afraid I don't know, Jing. I suspect not, but submitting her name to the

transplant coordinator should give you the answer soon enough. It won't hurt

to try.

Age of the donor aside, any donor also has to be approved by the team, which

in most places, includes a social worker and a psychiatrist (or

psychologist), in addition to all the medical stuff. Most places will not

approve a kidney donor if there isn't a demonstrated, long-standing

relationship (like a friend) with the recipient - but the degree to which

they apply this varies.

Kidney donor

Hi All,

I have a possible donor but she's only 17 years old. I tried to persuade her

against it but is very adamant. Her parents will sign a consent for her. Is

this possible? I know that they won't consider it until the donor is 18 yrs.

old. Any imput?

Thanks much,

Jing

Hi Jing,

What a sweet girl to want to donate at such a young age! For each

person that is wanting to possibly donate, they will do an interview

over the phone to see how serious the person is about it. The only

reason that they are adamant about letting younger kids donate is

because they are afraid they will back out at the last minute. I'd

at least try though, if she is serious about doing it, and is mature

enough to handle it. Donating a kidney is serious business.

Good luck...
