B,

I'm glad you asked this as I too at times feel a " fullness " in my throat.

Mine is mainly when I lay down on my left side...feels like the right side of

my throat flops over on my windpipe/trachea/whatever it's called. Also at

night, laying in bed, I can hear (rather loudly) myself swallow and it's kind

of squeaky sounding, like pushing something through a narrowed opening??

I've been so paranoid about this that I started measuring my neck with a tape

measure! Glad I'm not alone in this. I'm euthyroid also...still taking a

tiny bit of Tap daily...but have been stable/normal for almost 2 years now on

Tap.

I've had this too, (though I didn't seem B's original post on it) but

mine is the feeling of having someone lightly putting their hands around my

windpipe... my voice gets squeaky and one side or the other of my thyroid

gland is usually bigger than the other. Last month I had an ultrasound and

it showed the gland is enlarged still (though I am euthyroid on maintainance

dose of carbimazole) and that there was a slight indentation of my trachea

on the left side, caused by the enlarged thyroid.

However - I'm very glad to report that since I have been taking bugleweed

the size of my gland has reduced - even to the point where I find I can

exercise without getting that lump in the throat feeling.

Okay...just thought I'd chime in

Thanks Jody & Patti!

I may have my neck checked out just to be on the safe side, but I've assumed

all along that it's the lumpy bumpy thyroid (especially because this began

with teh onset of graves!).

There are worse thing!

see next off topic message for an example!

I also have both Hashi's and Graves, and one of my main pains in the neck

(pun not intended. ;) ) is that I always feel like I've got something

caught in my throat when I swallow pills and whatnot. I know that my

thyroid is starting to reduce in size a bit as I don't feel like I'm

choking so much when I put on a shirt that touches my throat -- of course,

I guess I could just be a little less sensitive now too. I also get the

" something stuck in my throat " feeling when I eat something like Tortilla

chips. It's annoying, but I've learned to live with it.

I had this with my GD but over the years has either gone away or I just dont

notice it anymore. I remember it was really hard to eat some meals though

and to take my pills.

I have the same feeling right now, as if somebody is lightly applying

pressure to my throat, but I thought that it was because I had gone hypo. It

is really quite disconcerting... I keep loosening my collar, as if that is

going to help. And I laughed when somebody said that they were going to

start measuring their neck with a tape measure... the same thought occurred

to me the other day. Is my neck swelling up and no-one is telling me ??? LOL

Gulp.... Take care, Kate.

Hi ,

Was it you that brought up the topic a long time ago, or the theory that

maybe GD and Hashi's are the same disease, and that GD is the hyper end of

Hashi's? I can't remember who brought it up, but we sure are seeing an

influx of people being diagnosed with both of them, so maybe this is a more

accurate theory than first believed. It sure makes sense to me.

I am waiting for my AB testing to come back, it is the first time I have

ever been tested for the ab's that show up in hashi's, it will be

interesting to see. If they also come back positive, my conversation with

my endo on this theory in 2 weeks will be very interesting :)

I'll throw this in for good measure. Although a large goiter may be the

cause of your throat " lump " it may also be calcification around the thyroid

gland (or what's left of it) if you have hashimoto's. My mother had a

terrible time with this and had surgery to remove part of her thyroid gland.

It was calcified all around the gland. I believe that the immune system

creates this in a misguided attempt to protect.
