I found them mainly to be constrictive but I tried on a Maya wrap (yes, there are different sizes) and it didn't feel the same. I am going to buy one for my next baby. They also come with a video showing how to use it in different positions and such. There are days when baby just needs to be held a lot and I know I have 4 other children and a husband to care for, and while they are all a huge help, there are some things that will need to be done my me. The sling is great for those times, and also even a tiny baby can get heavy after a while and your shoulders and back can get sore. With the sling, the baby's weight is distributed across your back, and you can actually use both hands when you need to, though for me most of the time one hand was under baby so it would still feel my arm there and I could feel the baby. There is also a large which might help if you are large chested as well. I got a Maya wrap a few months ago and have been practicing with my nephew - I think I'll like it a lot better. My sister doesn't like it, she says she can't seem to make it sit high enough to be comfortable and supportive and still have room for the baby. S. They do look pretty scrunched up in there, but if they are happy they are not uncomfortable. Think of how scrunched they are in the womb, I guess that's one reason they like the slings, that cozy feeling. I also read not long ago that slings are better for infants and small babies because it's better to have them laying like that or even kind of sitting up cross legged on their little legs than have all the pressure on their spine/tailbone that a regular carrier produces. I can't wait to tuck my new little one into it's sling and try it out again, it's been 6 years since my last baby! I haven't carried him sideways, I tried but he HATED it. I carried him upright with his head on my chest and his little legs and feet curled up under him on my belly, just like he was in the womb, but upright ;-) He would sleep for hours like that, cozy and listening to my heart. He still loves this position although with his legs stretched out more. I just started him in the kangaroo hold this week and he likes looking around at the world :-) I have never found the sling hard on my back, I can center him and if he is snug then he's not falling forward and my back isn't arching to compensate like it does with the front pack. You can also wear the baby and sling so that the baby is upright (like being burped but a little lower) or with the baby sitting cross-legged facing forward and out. My daughter likes all of these positions, and must be a sling-baby poster child around here. (Some slings too, so watch what you buy.) Most slings, though, can carry whatever weight we are comfortable carrying, and even help make carry 20+ pounders easier.
