Guest guest
HI , It is really good to hear from you. I am glad that you are past the surgery....it sounds like to went wonderfully....1 1/2 is what they usually tell you that it will take. I am very nervous about my surgery this Tuesday. I sure hope that my anxiety is much worse than the surgery!!!! Did you take any anti nausea medicine????? That is one of my concerns is waking up like that! Did it have anything to do with what you eat the night before???( I'm stretching...I know!) That's great that there was no lymph node involvement. Do you still have to go through RAI?? Sorry for all the questions......I am having a massage Monday night and hope that it relaxes me a little! I will find out Monday if I have to be at the hospital at 8am or 9am. I look forward to hearing from you! The idea of the initial hormone is just to keep you less hypo till they're ready to schedule your scan. Then, generally, 6-8 weeks prior, they'll put you on cytomel for all but the last 2 weeks. If they can't schedule the RAI for, say 12 weeks for some reason, you want to be taking the hormone for a few weeks. I was put on 75mcg (it's micrograms- mcg - rather than milligrams -mg. For those of us in the metric-challenged US, .75mg= 75mcg) post op by my surgeon. The amount isn't really critical, because it'll change after your RAI. Then they'll put you on a higher amount and adjust it every 6-8 weeks till levels are good and you feel ok. And, when you DO get your post-RAI stuff, you might want to talk to them about a less expensive T4 than Synthroid. I take Levoxyl, which is WAAAAY cheaper - so much so that I don't even use my insurance copayment. I shopped around for a place where I get them for less than the copay would be. Guest guest
wendy - don't worry about the questions...keep them coming if it will bring you comfort to have some answers. i was nervous but i was surprisingly coming on the way to the hospital. i was calm during check in as well. right after check in, they brought me back to a room where i changed and they had me wait on my bed. my husband was with me all this time. then the anesthesiologist came in and put the iv in me. one of the surgeons came out and introduce himself. i then got really nervous at this time but by then the iv in me had already started working. i started feeling " happy " because of the " coctail " they gave me. they say they do that before they wheel the patients into the or because some patients don't like the way the o.r seem " cold " . i kissed my husband and they wheeled me in. i remember being on my bed still and last thing i saw was my surgeons winking eyes. as he came in to say hello. the next thing i knew, i heard someone say " wake up yvonne " and i was heaving off to the side. it sounds bad but it wasn't because nothing came out (that's why it's important to not have anything in tommy after the cut off time). the heaving was not pleasant but it wasn't so bad as right away, they put something in the iv to calm you. you will then feel that nauseaous feeling come and go and they'll give you the meds as you need it or ask for it. the next real conscious memory i have was then asking to go " pee " . the nurse told me later that i actually got up and with help, went to the toilet (don't remember this). they said they told me i could go in the bed pan and i refused saying i can't and insiting that someone help me to the toilet. i seriously don't remember this. then i was sent to my own room afterwards i was also very sleepy for the next few hours afterwards so i don't even remember much. just remember waking up here and there and hearing the nurse ask " hows the pain " a couple of times. i was told that the nausea is just a reaction to the anesthesia and its pretty common. if they know you are allergic to the anesthesia then they'll give you the med before waking you. since i never had surgery, i didn't know what i was allergic to. now i do. really, the anxiety before the surgery is worse!!!! the actual surgery you won't even remember. when you get into your gown and they put your hairnet on, just tell yourself it's time to take the nap. by this time, you'll be pretty mellow already i hope. i will be praying for you and i know you will do spectacular as well. breath and sing. after tuesday, we'll be chatting about our treatment! email me direct if you want to talk and i'll email you my phone#. we can chat monday night if it makes you feel better. we're all here for you : ) yvonne --- Vitalich wrote: > HI , > > It is really good to hear from you. Guest guest
Hi Alisa, Thank you for your vote of confidence. I am feeling inspired after hearing from others that just had their surgeries. I will definitely speak with the anesthesiologist about my concerns...I do have a very sensitive system even though I am small but mighty. I am 105 lbs, 5'3'' ( before the anxiety set in and have probably lost a few pounds) and I know that I will be on a liquid diet for a day or so....I guess I shouldn't worry so much about my reaction to the anesthesia after surgery and know that maybe I will be one of the lucky ones that won't get nauseous like you! Thanks again....believe me....all the pep talks really help! L.A. tt-Sept. 10, 2002 aproctorus wrote: > > > > I am very nervous about my surgery this Tuesday. Guest guest
Hi, . The best of luck to you. I had my surgery in July and everything went well. It will for you too. For me, the anxiety was worse than the surgery itself. The recovery was quick with minimal discomfort. I didn't experience any nausea upon awakening. I will be thinking of you! n in NJ

Guest guest
Hi , I, too, am small-5'2 " " 100-103 lbs. My surgery was June 17, 2002-TT with 3 lymph nodes removed also. I had no trouble with nausea after anesthesia. My biggest problem is that I have difficulty waking up - it seems as though I struggle and that's the scariest to me. So the rest of day of surgery I basically just slept in and out (mostly in, I think!!) I was groggy all day and can vaguely remember visitors. But by the next day, it was better. I had surgery on a Monday and was discharged Wednesday. I did accept pain medication as needed, that seemed to help. Good luck, you'll do fine. Guest guest
Hi. We live in Metuchen. I had my surgery in Manhattan but I'm taking care of the RAI issues locally. I have three kids so logistically things have been a bit difficult. My husband works long hours but my parents came up from Florida when this started unfolding in June and will stay until after my RAI. It's wonderful that your mother and sister are coming!! I have my scan on 9/11 and can only think that it is the beginning of good things for all of us. The best of luck to you again. I will be thinking of you!! n
