Guest guest
Hello, I'm 4 weeks post op, I had my lower advanced 4 mm, and am healing/coping very well, much better than I expected. I asked my surgeon a ton of questions prior to surgery: -What is your #1 piece of advise for a fast recovery -How many of these surgeries do you do per year -Are there risks associated with the type of metal the screws/plates are -Will I be in ICU post op, or a regular room -Will you be in the recovery room when I wake up -Would you be oposed to me taking any homeopathic remedies to reduce swelling -Is the hospital familiar with this type of surgery, so they'll be aware of my recovery needs -Can my husband stay overnight with me (this was very helpful, he was able to get the nurses more quickly then the bell does = faster pain management, and help me to the bathroom) The thing that I think helped me the most was that I asked him to walk me through what it could be like when I wake up. He explained the possibility of a splint, wires, and tubes to assist with breathing, all of which scared me, but I think it was important for me to know so that I would be more aware if the situation did occur(I gain a sense of security from knowledge). He also then walked me through what was more likely to be my situation. He antisipated that I'd have nothing in my mouth, be swollen, have a sore throat, and be really groggy, that consequently was how I woke up. Hope that helps. > For those who have had the surgery already, what are some good > questions to ask the surgeon pre-op? > > I've enjoyed viewing this website as a passive observer for the past > year. I've had braces on for ~ 20 months. I'm attending my " 2nd > look " with surgery today at 1:00, and I hope to leave with a surgery > date. My ortho is recommending moving my lower 3-4mm back. Anyway, > I thought I would join and post now that I'm getting close. It looks > like a lot of people are getting the surgery this month. Guest guest
Thank you very much. This is quite helpful. I'm curious about the same things you mentioned. Knowing what to expect when I wake up will be nice. I'm scheduled for next friday, May 23rd. I have my pre-op on Monday, so I hope to go over things in more detail with my surgeon. Thanks again! > > For those who have had the surgery already, what are some good > > questions to ask the surgeon pre-op? > > > > I've enjoyed viewing this website as a passive observer for the past > > year. Guest guest
I had another question. Do you think you could have gone home the same day of the surgery? My surgery team is indicating that I'll be going home after the surgery since I'll only have the lower jaw moved back 4 mm. Since your procedure was similar I was curious what you thought. Guest guest
Hi . I am 5 weeks post op of having upper/lower/genio/cheek implants and they kept me in the hospital for 4 days . Personally, i had such a hard time int he hospital , i think another big reason they kept me in the hospital so long is because I am only 16 and i had so much work done to my face .. I also had a big problem with eating , i didnt come off the IV feeding until the last hour of the last day i was in th ehospital , the drugs just made me not wanna and i also had a fear of throwing up because i threw up in the hospital 2 times from the anestesia . Guest guest
: my date is May 23rd. I'm excitedly nervous too! Thanks for your reply. Maybe it isn't all that unusual, after all, to go back home the same day. I know that I would prefer to be at home than in a hospital room, but that's now when I'm not suffering all the swelling, etc. Anyone else go home the same day? Guest guest
Maybe I was just lucky, but the swelling after my lower advancement was pretty minimal. I think it's the folks who have the upper worked on, generally, who have the larger problems with swelling. I suppose I could have gone home later in the day, but my doc was one who keeps you in what's called the " Post Anesthesia Recovery Unit " overnight, just for the security of it, and I'm a timid soul. Actually, I had no real problems, but I also did use the morphine, and they didn't remove my catheter until the morning of the next day. Guest guest
My surgery is May 26, so if you're up to it, please let me know if you stayed the night at the hospital or not. I would prefer to stay at home as well, but then again, the nurses in the recovery room would know how to tend to you better. Re: 2nd Look : my date is May 23rd. I'm excitedly nervous too! Guest guest
- I'll definitely try to post as soon as I can. It's been so helpful to read comments of those who are in recovery right now, and I'd like to do the same. Good luck! Guest guest
Cammie, I think I'm going to ask that to my surgeon, about the " post anesthesia Recovery unit " , I'm paying for everything out of pocket, and when I went to register at the hospital, they said it wouldn't be any extra charge for staying there overnight, but when I asked the surgeon's office, she said there would be, but I think I didn't make myself clear on that. OR they are talking about 2 different rooms, one which you mentioned and the other, a private room somewhere else. Thanks for this info, though. Re: 2nd Look Maybe I was just lucky, but the swelling after my lower advancement was pretty minimal.
