Guest guest
Thanks, Gene. Let me know when and where and what I can do to help. Eddie Clinical Coordinator MetroCare Services 3913 Todd Lane, Suite 308 Austin, Texas 78744 Office: ext. 103 Pager: Re: EMS Education Eddie, I'm glad to hear that NR is " doing education now. " What a joke. I'd like to revive an educator's group. I agree that EMS education in Texas is in the toilet now. Maybe that's something that can grow out of the educator's summit. I don't want to limit that to just political stuff, though. My original idea was to make it a forum for teaching methods. I find that lots of folks do not know how problem based learning works, how distance ed works, how to use scenario practice, how to teach critical thinking and problem solving, and so forth. That's the focus I was thinking about, but if a politically active group emerges, so much the better. I'll count you in. GG E.(Gene) Gandy POB 1651 Albany, TX 76430 wegandy1938@... Guest guest
Sorry for my delay in chiming in on this issue, been a little busy. But I am back now and ready to participate. The EMS Educators Association of Texas is still alive and there is still a core group that participates regularly, well at least annually. Steve Kolar with North is the President, Ernie Whitener with Lee College is the Vice-President, Louis with on County is the Vice-President and Alan Baker (me) with College is the Secretary. The organization had discussions on NREMT examination and EMS education in August before the GETAC meetings. There was a NREMT Examination site for non-NREMT educators. Our groups biggest problem as a group, in my opinion, is communication. We hope to address that at the meeting at the Texas EMS conference later this month. I too am waiting to hear a meeting time. We were intentionally waiting to see when other groups posted their meeting times to try and avoid conflicts. I would offer the participation of the EMSEAT group in this Education Summitt, even though I have no authority to speak for the group without a vote. So I offer my own support for this endeavor. I would support the EMStock location but would also request that the date be checked against end of semester calendar for most colleges in Texas. You may have been doing this, but there has always been some conflict between the EMStock dates and some event going on here at VC. If the EMStock location does not pan out, I would suggest you could get ample room and facilities at just about any college that offers EMS, again, if it occurs between semesters. We have graduate surveys that suggest most employers are happy with our graduates. We have no patient surveys. I cannot tell you how patients feel about our graduates, but I feel I should be able to. I can tell you the three best subscale scores I have on NREMT and then describe ways that I teach it. I can also tell you the three worst subscale score and ask to see how others are teaching it. It is my impression Gene that you have admitted paternity to this Education Summit and you shoulder the decisions regarding it. I humbly suggest that you select a theme, a single topic to attack and conquer. You want to have a summit on how to improve EMT Basic airway subscales scores on NREMT or Paramedic score on Medical Emergencies. I'm there with you. Let me listen and watch someone with excellent results in Medical Emergencies on the NREMT demonstrate how they do that section. Or show me how someone teaches critical thinking skills to a student with a " teach me what's on the test " mentality. I am there with you. My NREMT results are not what they should be and I am asking for help. To take one of my quotes from medical mathematics, " I can't help you because I don't understand why you don't understand what I just told you " . Guest guest
The organization foundation is strong, the concepts are still valid. The problem has always been participation and activity between meetings. I have been neglect as Secretary is posting events. An issue I hope to improve on this year as I practice turning down other projects. Communication is our biggest deficit (IMO). The e-mail, the webpage, committee assignments and workdays are needed to make progress (again, IMO). I believe most members of EMSEAT would readily participate and support this type of event. I hope to see everyone at EMStock. PS. Ernie Whitener is the Treasurer. Alan Baker RE: EMS Education Sorry for my delay in chiming in on this issue, been a little busy. Guest guest
I'm not an EMS educator, but I have held trainings around the state at lots of different locations that we've been fortunate enough to get a no-cost or next-to-no-cost. My suggestions would include almost any community college or the smaller state schools - depending on timing they usually have a number of rooms that can hold large plenary discussions or make available the use of classrooms for smaller and/or work groups. In addition, there are a number of both types of schools located outside of the metropolitan cities. My favorites are the Regional Training & Development Center at Tyler (Tyler Junior College - West Campus), Texas A & M International in Laredo, Texas A & M Corpus Christi, College, Midland College, McMurry College in Abilene, Alvin Community College and Amarillo College. But as I said, many of the others are great also. If one of the college based faculty members were to sponsor, sometimes the colleges will waive fees. The key is to get there between semesters. If you want a not-so-big city, University of North Texas Health Science Center's School of Public Health in Fort Worth has Rolls Royce facilities. Just a thought to help the discussion. Barry S. Guest guest
Gene, Remember when we used to meet at the campus in Junction? I would bet we could meet there again. The people are friendly. The food is great! The have refurbished the whole campus. You can contact Martha at ext.222. Their website is www.depts.ttu.edu/hillcountry/junction/index.htm Thanks, Chris Re: EMS Education If we can help let me know. We have several rooms that can hold 30 or more. I can also get a room at Abilene Regional Medical Center. They have a couple of large rooms. Guest guest
Eddie, Yeah, I'm aware of the MetroCare location, since I'm just down the road. However, I think the EMStock idea is going to be the most popular. That does NOT mean that we coudn't have a regional meeting at MetroCare. I'd be for that as well. The advantage of EMStock is that there will be some leading educators from all over the country there; Wesley, Sue Roundy, DeFrance maybe, and so forth. So it looks like this may be bigger than " regional. Guest guest
Alan, I'm glad to hear that EMSEAT is still alive and well. I think EMSEAT ought to be involved in this summit. I have, indeed, taken the lead; however, I will need lots of help, and therefore I would like to add the EMSEAT officers to the list of interested parties. We're going to try to have a meeting in Austin at the conference to explore some ideas. Right now, it looks like we're going for a two day affair with multiple forums. So please be thinking about topics and ideas for how to run this. I'm leaning toward panel discussions and workshops rather than lecture presentations. So give me some more feedback, and Steve, Ernie, and Louis, please join in and give me your ideas. Gene > > Sorry for my delay in chiming in on this issue, been a little busy. Guest guest
Yes, I remember it. However, as many people hated it as liked it. You can't fly to it, and it probably would not appeal to the same number of folks that an EMStock forum would. For example, I cannot imagine people coming there to a forum from Alaska, Nevada, Maine, and Wisconsin, where some of the participants who will be at EMStock are from. So right now, I'm working on the premise that EMStock will be the best place to do it. However, it's still the first quarter. So let's bat this around till we're sure of what we're doing. Guest guest
Gene, Remember last year we had some really good educators from the other side of the pond making EMStock an international event. Guest guest
Barry, We are planning this next year to start that system with our next academy which starts in the summer. I am going to gather that material up when I get back after the holidays. As always I will be more than glad to share it with you. Send me an e-mail after the holidays to remind me, I plan on destroying a few brain cells between now and then. Take care and have a Merry Christmas.
