I think so. There are other numbers that are bigger on the report that

I really don't understand but that's what it says about cranial vault,

mid face, and skull base asymmetry. As I said, he's mild but you can

see that one eye is bigger and one ear is off, etc. Also, there is a

mild flat spot on his left back side that resulted from the tort

tilting. I don't want to band him if it's not necessary but also don't

want to regret not doing it later on down the line. What do you think?

Hi ,

Honestly, no. I would feel that I had made a mistake about not banding

if he never got better on his own. Yes, I have been repositioning him

but he wriggles out often and back onto the left flat side again so

it's tough. I will call CT now and see about rescheduling another

consult prior to banding. I assumed that they would want to do that

anyway since by the 24th, it will be six weeks but I will call ahead to

make sure.

Thank you for your help,

I'd try and step away from the numbers and base your decision on how

your baby looks. If he weren't to improve at all on his own, would

you be happy? Also, you said the measurements were done over a month

ago, right? Have you been repositioning him in the meantime? It may

make sense to go back to CT and have them comepare new pictures and

measurements with the ones they took then. Then you can get a new

opinion from them. They will tell you if his plagio is too mild for a

band to help him. If they recommend one though, than I'd go for it.

, if these numbers are correct, I think the tort is what is

causing the facial assymetry. I know you said that the tort is

resolved, but still an issue, what do you mean by that? If he still

has tort, you have to do the stretches and get him into physical

therapy. Good luck, Debbie and Brielle

Hi Deborah,

I mean that the tort seems to be resolving and getting better but that

we're not quite completely there yet. We are still going to PT once

weekly (have been since my baby was two months old) as well as seeing a

doctor of osteopath. We do the home stretches religiously each day and

they have really helped. Right now, our PT thinks that my son may be

tilting intermittently because he is teething and not because the

muscle is tight anymore but we really don't know for sure. I think it's

possible that his asymmetry is caused in large part by the tort but he

does have a mild flat spot on the left so it's hard to say for sure. I

am grateful that his case is not severe but if there is something more

that I can do to help him, I'd like to do it.

Thank you

Sorry to interupt this conversation; Debbie, do you mean that

torticollis can cause assymetry directly and not just result of the

plagio? How does that happen? Does it also cause ear misallignment

directly?

Hi Kerry. Yes both my PT and the cranial sacral therpist as well as

the cranial facial specialist told us that we need to fix that tort

to help correct the facial assymetry. If the muscle of the neck is

tight, it pulls everything down. I think the band/helmets help to

fix the shape and yes from what others say assymetry, but if your not

getting PT and stretching that muscle you won't get as mush

improvement. Check out Brielle B in the photos we didn't band we did

cranial sacral therapy and PT she looks good. Debbie

The neck muscle is tight, therefore pulling down on

the face and ear. At least that is what I think. Think

of how your leg feels when you get a muscle cramp in

saw the calf and how it tightens up.

Our PT said you can differentiate the facial asymmetry caused by

tort and that from plagio by placing a thumb on each cheekBONE.

Since you are judging by the skull and not the muscle the asymmetry

is from the plagio.

Hi Stacey,

I think you're right. The banding appt. is already made for Oct. 24th

and I think I should just put the whole thing out of my mind until that

day. Once it's done, I will feel much better and there will be no more

indecision.

Thanks,

Hi ,

If that's the way you feel then I think you should band him. It's not

very likely that it'll correct on it's own. NOW is the time to take

care of this. The window of opportunity to correct plagio isn't a big

one.

Good luck making your decision, let us know what you decide.

Carol,

Okay, well that makes sense. His worst measurement is the one you

notice. It's a 4mm between his left eye and ear. But I also think that

the tort has caused much of the asymmetry too and I am hoping that he

will outgrow this in time. We've been doing PT and home stretches for

five months now (we discovered the tort when he was two months old and

he's exactly seven months today) along with cranial sacral therapy and

chiropractic adjustments to the neck. On Sept. 1, he received a botox

injection from a specialist at our Children's Hospital to try to help

loosen the muscle up. I think this has helped as much as the

stretching. I want to have CT remeasure him quickly when we go back

to see how much improvement there has been as it will be six weeks

since we were last there by the time we go back on the 24th. I am also

going to try to post his Photo study pics here as soon as I am can get

my husband to help me scan them (I'm not really computer savvy-LOL).

CT told me that they did not really feel that he needed to be banded

but they said that they ultimately leave it up to the parent to decide

which I thought was nice. I am sure that they won't band him unless

they really feel that it will help. It's good to know that they are so

honest.

Thanks,

If I remember right, 0-2mm in all areas is normal, but I have heard

others say it is 0-3mm and I know CT starts to band at 5mm usually.

Hi Carol,

Sorry it took so long to reply. Yesterday was my daughter's third

birthday and I was busy. Yes, I am glad we found Cranial Sacral

Therapy. did it from about 2 months until 4 months of age and

then started again at 6 months with a DO who also does gentle

chiropractic adjustments on his neck. I do know about the torticollis

board also, thanks. They have been very helpful through all of this. I

will try to post 's pictures tonight if possible.

Thanks for your help!

The tort can caused such awful asymmetry, but alot of it will correct

as the tort corrects. You may have to get used to the fact that

sometimes not all asymmetry can be 100% fixed, but it can get much

better. How bad is the tort still? Cranial Sacral is a great tool from

what I have heard, we have alot of moms using it here. Have you posted

on the torticollis board at all to see if they have any suggestions for

you. The address is

THAT has been my biggest question in this whole process of deciding to

band my son - Owen. We go tomorrow for the casting, but I have this

nagging question in the back of my head that keeps saying " are you SURE

it won't gradually fix itself " ? His case is considered 'moderate'

according to the CT here in Atlanta.

I found myself looking at all the back of mens heads in church this

morning =)to see if any adult man had a 'mishappened' head. To no

avail....so this leaves me with my nagging question. Why if it does

not fix it self at some point, do no adults (of any particular age)

appear to have misshaped heads??? They couldn't have ALL slept on

their stomachs as infants could they?????
