Wow ... I am really glad for you. That must be so exhilarating to be

able to spend a whole 45 minutes with your doctor actually discussing how

you feel. I am very jealous. Now .... the most important question...

whereabouts in the country is he ?

Kate.

Hi ,

Congrats on the new doc!!! When he does your labs in April, will he check

the antibodies for Hashi's?

Also, did he elaborate on the following?

>>>He also thinks all of this may just have been brought on by the birth of

>>>my last child and that the GD is burning itself out<<<

Like, exactly what does this mean, and what will it mean when it burns

itself out? Will he continue monitoring your TSI ab's?

Just curious,

Jody

Hi

That is wonderful news. Good on you for not giving up. Your new doctor

sounds great and what is most important, understanding.

Hope that you experience some real change and are on the road to feeling

fantastic soon.

Wow! What a great result with your doctor. I, too, want to know where your

doc is. We're in the KC area. Anywhere close to you?

Well, Kate, now there's the rub! Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It's pretty much next

to Nowheresville. I'm so glad this guy worked out, because he was my only

chance at a doctor in town with any thyroid experience! I have to believe

that no matter where on Earth you are, you have to be nearer to a good

doctor than here!

Hi Jody -

I got the impression that if the FT4. looks below normal in April (or sooner

if I feel hypo sooner) then he'll look for that possibility since I've

already got the family history.

>>>>He also thinks all of this may just have been brought on by the birth of

>>>>my last child and that the GD is burning itself out<<<

He didn't go into specifics on what exactly he meant by this, but I did

throw a lot of info at the guy in a short amount of time, so if he wanted to

do some checking, I sure wouldn't blame him. I believe what he meant is

similar to what I'd been trying to explain to my previous doc this whole

time. I had no problems before 's birth in Aug. 2000. I had a normal

TSH (1.97) in mid Sept. 2000. Started to feel bad in May 2001. By June, my

TSH was .05. So in a 9 month post partum period, my TSH went from 1.97 to

..05. This always seemed a little too coincidental to me. Elaine has pointed

out that it is not uncommon to develop GD in a post partum period. I don't

exactly understand the reasons why this may be the case, and it's likely

still unknown, but it seems like the pregnancy was a contributing factor for

me. My original doc has always considered this hogwash and that if it had

anything to do with my recent pregnancy, it would have shown up earlier and

wouldn't have lasted this long (I think he's thinking of post partum

thyroiditis, not GD). I just find it difficult to believe the two events

aren't related, and it seems this new doc does, too. I gather that he thinks

this may have been a kind of temporary episode of hyperT due to GD brought

on by effects of pregnancy and whatever its impetus was is now running out,

thus " burning itself out " or " running its course " . I don't think he knows

what that course will be yet, whether I will go hypo, or balance out to

euthyroid, or cycle back again to hyper in the future. Stranger things have

happened, after all. I think the new doc wants to do a little more research

before explaining his theories, which I completely respect him for!

I'm sure if I request it, he'll still run TSI, but I think he's less

concerned about that now that everything seems to be going down. In April,

I'm supposed to get Total T4, FT4, TSH, CBC, and complete metabolic panel

(whatever that includes) run. He didn't order any antibodies tested yet, but

I think he wants to see what the results of these are before he figures out

which of the antibodies he wants to look for.

Now Jody, if only you could have come with me, you could have brought up a

whole ton of good questions like this that I didn't remember to ask!

Hi Jody -

I got the impression that if the FT4. looks below normal in April (or sooner

if I feel hypo sooner) then he'll look for that possibility since I've

already got the family history.

LOL Doris! Isn't this the absolute truth! Of course, we'd have to then

destroy all the bad docs, or just let them practice on each other! (Ooh, I

think I just imagined what Hell for Bad Doctors must be like!)

Elaine -

Definitely! I considered adding him today, but I figured I ought to at least

see him once more to be fair before I recommend him! After all, perhaps I'm

still in the euphoria of having found a decent doc, and not objective yet! I

know he's not listed yet. There's only like 3 doctors listed for all of

Iowa, and none for my city.
