If you belong to Costco, their KIRKLAND brand of Natural Fish Oil

Concentrate, 1000mg with Omega-3 Fatty Acids...The USP Supplement Facts suggest

taking 2

tabs daily which contains EPA 300 mg and DHA 200 mg.

We don't have a Costco around here. Never heard of it.

This one says EPA 180 mg and DHA 120 mg. It says nothing about Omega 3 Fatty

Acids.

Hmmmmmmmmm. What's the recommended daily mg intake for EPA, DHA and Omega 3

Fatty Acids? Or does that differ per person/age, etc.?

Ok I was wrong. I see that this GNC brand does have 1000 Omega Fatty Acids

in it.

His Neph was wanting him to take 4 Fish Oil pills of the MAXX EPA or

something equivalent. I don't know what the MAXX EPA has in it to know what is

equivalent. Guess I'll have to give her a call on Monday. Until then I guess

it'll

be ok for him to take this GNC brand, although the EPA and DHA doesn't have

as many mg as this Costco Brand ya'll are talking about. And it says 2 pills

at each meal.....I'm assuming that means 6 pills per day.

Hi ,

Try looking at Costco for fish oil. If you don't have one in your area, you

can go to www.costco.com and purchase it there. I don't take the fish oil

myself, but I do know for those that do, it is generally recommended to take 4

or

6 at a time for IgAN.

For more information, you may want to go to our sister site www.igan.ca and

read the article on fish oil there.

Hope this helps .

Those are standard dosage amounts for omega 3 fish oil capsules and are

the amounts in the the MaxEPA brand. There probably isn't a recommended

daily intake and even if there were, it wouldn't matter because you

don't take it for health maintenance when you have IgAN. The original

research on fish oil with IgAN was based on 12 capsules a day, usually

6 in the morning and 6 at night. More recent research suggests that 6

per day does about the same. I think it's better to split the amount

and take it twice a day, but my son preferred to take them all at night

so the fishy taste was gone by the time he woke up in the morning. His

neph. said that was OK, the most important things being his compliance

with taking them.

In the brand we purchase, each MaxEPA 1000 mg softgel has 180 mg of EPA

(Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and 120 mg of DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). We purchase

them from Puritan's Pride. Contact www.puritan.com or 1 for

ordering. If I recall correctly, the dosage used in Mayo study was six 1000 mg

per dose @ twice per day.

Puritan's Pride also carries Super EPA 1000 mg softgels, with 300 mg of EPA and

200 mg of DHA per softgel. Hope this helps in finding the right fish oil.

O.k. I just had one of those *Doh!* moments...I never thought to check our

Sams Club for fish oil. " Doh! " I've been using the Spring Valley brand from

Wal-mart but it sounds like I could be getting 3 times as many capsules for

the same price at Sams. My neph never gave me a brand name he just said

" find one that will work for you they are all pretty much the same. " I'm on

6-1000mg caps daily , 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA. I've never been able to

locate the brand used in the study locally.

The subject of Coromega came up, I guess, about a year or two ago, when

people were looking for a better tasting alternative for fish oil. One thing

I want to stress though, is that, in terms of the medical benefit, there

really is no need to spend more for fish oil, just like there's no need to

buy a brand name, premium-brand high-priced aspirin. All that matters is the

EPA/DHA content in the capsule. EPA and DHA are explained on the fish oil

page of www.igan.ca

On the fish oil question. If you are worried about brands being different

and all, I have a little advice. Sometimes, the " generic " brands you can get

from Wal-mart, Sam's, Alberttson's or whatever, are all just fine. I have

noticed, though that in some other kind of vitamins, they are not good

enough. Let me explain myself. Some generic brands may contain the same

exact dosages of the main ingredient as the pricier brands, but they are not

as bio-available to your body. That is, they are presented in a form that

your body either can't or doesn't process, so basically they run right

through you without giving you any benefit all. I don't think this is

necessarily true with the fish oil, though it may be with other vitamins, as

I said. That is why, when these situations come up, I would recommend going

to a vitamin or health food store specifically, and ask the people there

about it. Some of those vitamins are formulated so that they have been

" pre-processed " so that when you swallow them, the nutrients are immediately

available to your body. I hope that anyone who cares about this can

understand what I mean.
