It was a bit of a dig at Jim, hinting he has been a psychiatric

patient. I doubt I have to tell you that in Psychiatry a happy

customer is a very rare bird!

Pete, you're still a stepper, right? Well, it's starting to show.

The " Adios " presumably means I'm not allowed to answer the accusation.

How fair-minded of you. " Stepper " ought to mean practising the 12

step program, so the answer is no. This is a pretty lame jibe Jim.

Many, perhaps most, steppers express hostility toward psychiatry just

like you do. It is one of their most damaging effects.

Having said that, I think you are being unfair to Psychology.

Clinical Psychology is every bit as scientific as Psychiatry, though

of course other branches of Psychology, such as Psychoanalysis, are

not. Unfortunately many clinical psychologists do abuse their

licenses by diverging into pseduscientific psychology. However

psychistrist probably do that as much too.

again, there are perfectly " respectable " attempts at science in psychology

and pharmacology in psychiatry. The mainstream of academic psychology

concerns itself with cognitition and learning and is based upon scientific

experimentation. There are still lunatics who are (here we go again)

cultists who would adhere to a certain approach because of the charisma of a

leader, best example Freud. Making an entire field a boogey man without

knowing what is really going on is not doing justice to oneself or others.

Thanks Pete. Piper.

Great. They are some of the most commonly prescribed drugs- worse

than coca-cola. I used to be on prozac. At the time I thought it was

helping me, but after stopping I'm not so sure now. I know people who

This is extremely and highly uniformed and biased, Jim. I think myself and

others have pointed out your " blind spots " with regard to all of the

literature and outcome studies in pharmacological and psychotherapeutic

studies that show significant improvements for people who have life

threatening mood disorders, anxiety disorders and psychosis. You are coming

from some kind of belief system (it feels like Scientology) that is keeping

your from even gathering the data. Piper.

Szasz is kind of a nut case, along with R D Lang. They see mental illness as

'an alternate lifestyle' and don'tbelieve in psychotropics. I've seen

schizophrenics without their meds.....I disagree....

I think that Szasz made us think more critically in some areas

and Laing was coming from an esoteric viewpoint that was way out there that

just didn't pay off scientifically, as we can see from the aid the

psychotropics have given people in trouble. I think the use of these two as

references for a radical negation of the aid that people can receive from

psychology, social work, and psychiatry is a charlatan ruse. Piper.
