Beckie,

Cereal is less nutritious and has less calories than breastmilk. I don't

know how your doctor can justify that one. Anyway one of the best things

for reflux babies is elevation, which means raising the head of whatever bed

she sleep on as well as nursing her in near upright positions. This can

give a lot of relief by letting gravity assist to keep everything down.

Also make sure that she is kept with her head very elevated for at least 20

minutes after each feed. :D

took Mikayla to the DR today.

Becasue she has been voilently vomiting since last thursday. She has always

thrown up here and there, and sometimes a little more often then others, but

since last Thursday she has thrown up up to 3 times daily. The DR said it

sounds like reflux, she gags a lot, so the Dr said he wants to see her in 1

week for a weight check, he also said that if the vomiting continues, and

she is gaining weight, then he said that we may need to start her on rice

cereal at 4 months, which is a few weeks away. If she is not gaining

weight(which I know she is) she weighed 15 lbs 4 oz last wednesday, and

today she was 15 lbs 8 oz. on her 2 month visit she weighed 12 lbs 8 oz. so

she has gained 3 lbs in a little over a month, that is excellent weight

gain. but anyway, he does not think we will need any medications for this

at this point, it depends on her weight.

But I did not want to introduce any solids for at least 6 months, I am sure

she will be fine without the cereal as long as she is gaining right? any

advise?

thanks,

Beckie and Mikayla 2/17/00

Thanks Wendi, I was also wondering if maybe the all of a sudden vomiting(it

slowed way dwon for a while and then all of a sudden started back up) could

be from her sleeping 7-9 hours straight at night, and then eating too fast

in the morning? it seems it started when she begin sleeping this many hours

at night. (started back up) she has always vomited every once in a while.

yes cereal does help with reflux, it is much heavier, and tends not to come

up as easily.. we had to start it at 3 months, because of reflux

I am gonna go ahead and wait, she did vomit today once only so far, and It

was after she had nursed a really engorged breast, so I am thinking that she

may be geting too much to eat, and her tiny tummy just cant handle it, I am

not gonna add rice cereal at 4 months, I want to wait until at least 6

months.

I agree with Wendi that cereal is a second-rate food as compared to

breastmilk. However, in certain unusual circumstances, reflux being one of

them, giving cereal can actually help. I have a friend who was facing a

similiar dilemma: she wasn't planning on introducing solids until later, but

her baby threw up a lot after each feeding, even when different positioning was

tried. The addition of cereal helped him tremendously. The theory is the

" weight " of the cereal in their tummy helps keep it down. Note that my

friend's baby had this problem from birth, and it was constant -- it never had

periods of getting better, until the cereal. It's obviously up to you, and

depends on how much the vomiting bothers you and her.

her baby threw up a lot after each feeding, even when different positioning was

Beckie,

You are probabaly on the right track about the long sleep hours. You might

even consider waking her once and letting her nurse at night ( I know it's a

horrible idea to wake a sleeping baby, but in this case it might be worth

it). The other thing I would suggest is that during her morning feed you

take her off and burp her very frequently. :D

Margaret,

I understand the cereal theory as well, but have seen it cause a lot more

trouble than help. I have only seen it truly help in one case but have seen

it backfire many times. Of course, it is a personal choice and something to

try or at least think about. :D Thanks for the other side of it.

I know that with reflux, there's a higher likelihood of aspiration when a

baby partially vomits. With cereal, it could cause serious problems...

with breastmilk, it would cause very few if any.

thnks , I think it is just a mild reflux, if she eats more then she

shold too fast. this morning I latched her on, then when I felt the mil let

down, I unlatched her, and let it squirt nto a cloth, and out her back on

after it quit squirting, and so far no vomit:-) but it still may come up I

dont know yet. its jsut int he mornings it is fuller, and I think it comes

too fast for her. At least I hope this si the problem, we will see.

on another note, I was so mad yesterday. This agency called us(cant remmeber

exactly what it was called, but it was about resorts, they try to sell you

resorts) well if you go and listen to their 2 hour or so thing, in return

they give you a trip to either RENo or Vegas, well we were all set to go to

it(we did this before for another outfit,a nd got the trip to vegas and had

a blast) well my husbands says (while still on the phone) that kids are not

allowed not even the baby. I said well then we are not going. she is only 3

months old, and nurses probobly every 2-3 hours still during the day. and

this place is like a hour at least away from where I live, so that means I

owuld be gone at the minimum 4 hours, probobly longer. there is no way I am

leaving her for that long, she will never last tha tlong without nursing

during the day. so I got mad and defensive and told my husband to tell them

that it will be at least a year before we could even consider it. he told

them to call back in the fall(he did not want to be an ass). He even tried

to tel them that she is an excellent baby, we take her to the movies all the

time, and she does just fine. I was so mad.

leaving her for that long, she will never last tha tlong without nursing

during the day. so I got mad and defensive and told my husband to tell them

that it will be at least a year before we could even consider it. he told

them to call back in the fall(he did not want to be an ass). He even tried

to tel them that she is an excellent baby, we take her to the movies all the

time, and she does just fine. I was so mad.

Beckie, I'm sorry to hear Mikayla is having vomiting problems. If it is, in

fact, reflux, it sounds like it's not very severe since she has great weight

gain. Perhaps she'll grow out of it soon?

Our older daughter was diagnosed with reflux when she was an infant. By the

time we went in for her 2 month visit, she was not gaining weight and she

was projectile vomiting after every feeding. The pediatrician wanted me to

start supplementing with formula (the reflux wasn't diagnosed yet). I did.

The vomiting got worse. To make a long story short, when she was 6 months

old, we were finally sent to a specialist. Hannah was 7 lbs. at birth and

only 10 lbs. at 6 months. She nearly had to be hospitalized. The dr. put her

on some medication, she got rice cereal in every bottle and started a solid

diet by 7 mo. Fortunately, by the time she was 1, the reflux had pretty much

gone away.

I think Mikayla should be ok without solids, but YMMV. I wish with Hannah

I'd fought that ped about supplementing because I can't help but feel the

formula was harder on her system. The solid food wasn't so bad, but it was

more difficult than breastfeeding!
