Guest guest
The following essay by Stanton Peele appears in " Rules, Rituals, and Responsibility: Essays Dedicated to Herbert Fingarette " : http://www.peele.net/lib/fingers.html Included in the book is Fingarette response to Peele's essay, but since the response is not available at Peele's site, I thought I would share this quote. Of all the reading I have done on this issue over the past ten years, this quote stands tall in my memories: " ...but what stands out, when the empirical issues are more directly addressed, is the deplorable state of the field of alcohol studies. This condition is not due to an absence of good scientists, but to the presence in the alcoholism field of a near-overwhelming population of organized, emotionally driven, economically motivated, and doctrinally committed individuals. They control the levers of power, money, politics, and organization in the nation's efforts to deal with alcohol problems. More to the present point, they prolifically generate reports, studies, and reviews, as well as a flood of publicity and popular literature, all of which either lack scientific validity, or at best present tendentious readings of valid scientific data. " I had mentioned in an earlier post how I believed this tied in with Dickson White's thesis http://www.human-nature.com/reason/white/contents.html but this online version of White's work does not include the introduction to the book which includes White's thesis statement. I have it on order and will post it when I get it.
Guest guest
Tommy, this was excellent. I only have one of Stanton Peele's articles, which appeared in Science a few yrs back. Would you have a bibliography of his writings on the alcoholism field? Thanks. Piper.

Guest guest
The introduction to Dr. White's book IS online and I'll post the link in the 12sf links next to the text. Here is White's thesis: " In all modern history, interference with science in the supposed interest of religion, no matter how conscientious such interference may have been, has resulted in the direst evils both to religion and science, and invariably; and, on the other hand, all untrammeled scientific investigation, no matter how dangerous to religion some of its stages may have seemed for the time to be, has invariably resulted in the highest good both of religion and science.
