Guest guest
Could it be, vis a vis swallowing, that you are still sore from the intubation? I really was, immediately post op, anyway, and that's the reason my surgeon gave me liquid meds. I could have dealt with pills by mouth, but he didn't want me to have to put them down that sore throat. Cammie > Thanks everyone for their responses!! They have all been really > helpful. Guest guest
Hi Hillary, I also had a sore throat for awhile post-op, aggravated by a persistent and nasty cough, so swallowing hurt at times. I found icy water to be comforting, sometimes I would just hold it at the top of my throat before swallowing. As your swelling starts to go down, this will improve. Just take it easy on what you pour down there! you don't want to burn anything. Day by day, it will get better.
Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for your response. In your reply you mentioned that you had a nasty cough... i have the same problem. Especially in the morning when i wake up, i feel the need the cough of all of this stuff. And today, when i did i coughed up blood (sorry to be so graphic:) Did you experience this at all? Any tips? Do you think I might disturb any screws, plates ect.. from coughing? Thanks for your help! Guest guest
Hillary, I've got the same problem, except mine is aggravated by the fact that I've got a whole lot of extra blood in my sinus cavity that I need to get out due to a popped vein. I find that one of the best ways to get it feeling better is as if you were trying to remove phlegm from the back of your throat; like that cough to bring it up again. The blood dries along the back of the throat otherwise and it's awful. But be careful... Do it too much and you'll make your throat feel worse. I find doing it in the morning is most helpful because that's when most of the blood dries; overnight when your sleeping. The other thing that one of the doctors said that could help is a big bowl of hot water, and you put your head over it and then a towel over that and inhale the steam. -- james On 30/4/03 21:41, " orthognathicsurgerysupport " <orthognathicsurgerysupport > wrote: > Message: 9 > Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2003 23:28:40 -0000 > > Subject: Re: Day 6 post-op > > Hi , > > Thanks for your response. Guest guest
Hi Hillary, Sorry, I've been away from my computer and just saw this. I really, really coughed hard, and I could feel it in my upper palate, sort of between the inside of my mouth and the inner-inside, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I sent my husband to the pharmacy to get me the strongest cough syrup possible - he asked the pharmacist what I could take at the same time I was taking the liquid tylenol, without overdoing it. The only syrup that seemed to help was Delsym DM. It's supposed to give 12 hours of relief, but it only lasted about 3 hours for me, or less. I think (but I'm not positive, so check this) that my surgeon said I could take it three times a day instead of twice and it wouldn't cause problems. It was extremely hard to wait for that next dose. I drank so much (to try to soothe my burning throat) that I think I lowered the level of the Great Lakes by at least an inch : ) I honestly don't know which came first, the sore throat or the cough, but each seemed to make the other worse. I would get up in the middle of the night and slooooooooowly sip icy water, trying to leave it at the base of my throat as long as possible. Anyway, I am prone to a severe, persistent dry cough, and it went on way too long for my taste. In December, I went to see an ENT to have a scope put down my throat to make sure that it wasn't something more serious " You're fine " he said " the strain of colds going around takes a lot longer to get over " . I also have an appointment with a respirologist in just over a month, and we'll see what the outcome of that is. I never coughed up blood, but yes, there was ample phlegm in my chest, just hard to get it out. Talk to your surgeon to be sure, but I don't think it will hurt the plates & screws. If it did, I'd surely be more crooked-faced than I turned out, because I was coughing so hard that my colleagues at work were afraid I was going to die.... thankfully the cough seems to have subsided, and it's just the odd fit I have each day or so. Hope it's getting better for you these last few days! > Hi , > > Thanks for your response. In your reply you mentioned that you had a > nasty cough... i have the same problem.
