Guest guest
I wasn't affected, but my ortho said that depression is very common after this sort of surgery. He even quoted the percentage as 78% which seems awfully high to me. I hope your meds work. If you're up to it, try some sustained aerobic physical exercise. Guest guest
Sorry to hear about the blues, and the divorce (although if it's what you want and need, there's no reason to regret it, I suppose). The steroids can indeed trigger depression, and it's not unusual to have mood swings post-op. Guest guest
Hi , I didn't experience it, but my ortho warned me that I might feel down from the effects of the anaesthetic, even weeks post-op. Apparently it does take a long time to clear from the system. Anyway, he said that the frustrations we deal with post-op (all that nasty hardware in our mouths, numbness, tingling, zappers, drooling, food deprivation, etc) can really get a person down. Plus you're swollen and not sure how you're going to end up. Lots on the plate, add the D word, and heck, I'm not surprised you're on an emotional rollercoaster. I think it's ok to do whatever works to get your equilibrium back again. Chemical help in the short term, so what? How's your little girl dealing with your changes (her newly improved mom)? Guest guest
Really sorry to hear of you in this state, but I think whenever you get such a major disruption to your life it's a perfectly normal reaction. I'm at three weeks now, and started feeling very bad when I managed to burst a vein and start up a whole lot of bleeding, pressure and pain all along the right side of my face. Easter Saturday night, blood going everywhere, surgeons nowhere to be seen, and my sister had an acute case of tonsillitis (three visits to casualty for my family in one day! agghh) and I could have sworn that this was the worst decision I'd made in a long while. However, you'll start to recover, you get little things that make you feel better (food... Esp chocolate! ) and suddenly it's not so bad. I also found that having friends around helps a lot - especially if you've got a friend who'll make you laugh. That helps heaps I would personally be very apprehensive to get on pills, but then I'm not a doctor either. Perhaps you might feel better if you got over this " au natural " ; try a few of those tricks above and see if they help. I hope you're feeling better soon; try to remember, plenty of people feel depressed about things that may not ever get resolved. This, on the other hand, will heal, and the bands (if you still have them) will come off... Life will be good again! -- james > Message: 15 > Date: Wed, 30 Apr 2003 18:35:53 -0000 > From: flossifooey > Subject: The Blues at 5 weeks post op. > > Hi all, > > Checking in again & want to ask all the post oppers if they > experienced depression after a few weeks? > > The reason i ask is that about 2 weeks ago i seemed to sink into the > most horrible mood swings. Guest guest
Hey , I can relate to you totally! After the 2nd week I went into a total down fall and became completely depressed and moody. It was really hard to get back up but now at week 7 I feel almost back to my old self!! Hang in there! Try to keep yourself distracted by being around friends and family whom you enjoy being around with. Try to avoid thinking about anything that stresses you out. I actually went out and bought some soap and candle making books and materials and got into a new hobby to try to take my mind off of everything. Good Luck!! Keep us updated!! Sincerely, Vivian

Guest guest
Hey , I had post-op blues last week which was week # 7 for me. I'm back to my normal happy self but for a couple days I was really down. For me, there was so much anticipation for a year-- pre-op nerves, insurance fiascos, the actual surgery, doctors appointments and recovery. There was so much to do and worry about. Now that I am further along in my recovery and I don't have all those worries, I feel like now what? It was weird to realize that I was finished with surgery. Now I am looking forward to getting these braces off in about 6 months! I hope that you are feeling better soon. Hang in there! Molly The Blues at 5 weeks post op. Hi all, Checking in again & want to ask all the post oppers if they experienced depression after a few weeks? The reason i ask is that about 2 weeks ago i seemed to sink into the most horrible mood swings. Strangely enough not about my face (love it!!). Ive had 3 episodes of depression in the past and my surgeon warned me this might make me more prone. As ive been in that dark tunnel before & dont particularly want to go there again i sought medical advice. The Doc said he was not familiar with my surgery so couldnt say if it was normal to feel 'blue' but decided i should start another course of Anti-depressants. Mainly due to my history & current personal difficulties (MY D-I-V-O-R-C- E.........join in if u know it). Before i got chance to let my Surgeon and Ortho know about this, my ortho asked if id hit the depression yet. Im now regretting starting back on the drugs as it may just be a passing phase - not true depression! HAs anyone else out there experience similar feelings of being generally fed up, moody, & sometimes justa darn right pain in the bum! As always lot of love xxx
