When I was in Fayetteville, we had 3 that were like this, got so bad

that we finally took up a collection and bought the worst one a bus

ticket to the northeast which is where he said he had family at.

Well, after him being gone for about 5 or 6 weeks, we rested comfortable

knowing that he was now the problem of someone else, until he showed up

again.

Seems that the EMS service there, took up a collection, threw in food

and a 6 pack and put him on a bus ticket back to Fayetteville.

Next thing we knew, his family was no longer from the northeast, they

were from CA, and he asked if we would take up another collection to

send him there. Our plan had backfired...

Criminal charges is all that you can do, and even then, if the Chief is

asking you for help, that seems to be a difficult option, perhaps the

district attorney?

Looking for suggestions

All,

I need suggestions on how to get rid of a bum. I know that

sounds harsh, but I am as serious as death. We are on an

Interstate highway, and one of the intersections here has

several truck stops, a couple of convenience stores, and

several fast food establishments so it's not unusual for

transients to take up temporary residence here. They don't

usually cause any significant problem, but this current

situation is different--it is absolutely the worst we have

encountered. He's not just a problem for EMS--in fact, the

Police Chief approached me and asked me to help him find a

solution because this man is causing such a problem for LE.

The area hospitals don't want him because he has abused the

system so much. Notice that I DID NOT say that they have

refused to take him--just that they don't want him.

He's causing a multitude of problems for area businesses and

their customers. The numerous calls for law enforcement from

these businesses is putting a strain on local law enforcement

resources. He's putting a strain on our limited EMS

resources. In fact, the last time we transported him (to the

hospital he wanted to go to) the Sheriff's Department had to

be called to the hospital to take him off our stretcher,

because after getting to the hospital he decided that he

didn't want to be treated there after all, and refused to get

off the stretcher. United Way has tried to get help for him,

but he got mad and created a disturbance at their office and

now refuses to go back there. At least 2 hospitals have

tried to get assistance for him through charity

organizations, but he won't cooperate and won't follow up. He

refuses to go to a shelter because they won't let him smoke

and drink. According to a judge that the Police Chief talked

to, mental health is probably not an option because of the

limitations on holding him against his will. Adult

Protective Services is willing to try to get help for him,

but can't without his cooperation. He says he is a veteran,

but refuses to try to get help through any of the veteran

organizations. He says he has four children but doesn't get

along with them and won't go to any of them for assistance.

The jail doesn't want him because of his health problems. A

couple of times, people have even given him rides to other

towns hoping that he won't come back here. He brags that he

can be back to hire before they can. He has made it

abundantly clear through his words and his actions that he

only wants handouts and will not accept any legitimate

assistance. I don't wish ill on any other town or department,

but if this man refuses to be helped, then he just needs to

take his problems on down the road.

So, I am looking for any suggestions anyone might have on how

to handle this. If you've been successful in dealing with

this kind of situation before, please let me know how you did

it. If there is some legal/law enforcement option that we

might not have thought of, please let me know.

There's probably not much that could be done in the way of charges against him,

except for something like PI. And if LE takes him into custody, then comes the

problem of figuring out what to do with him. The city jail isn't set up to hold

someone for very long, and the county jail doesn't want him because of his

health problems.

The bus ticket might be an idea, though. He doesn't get along with his family,

so he wouldn't want to go to them. However-------he tells us that he came here

from Austin, so if anyone there really misses him, just let me know and we'll

arrange for him to come see you!
