Guest guest
I'm taking over a class for another instructor Monday and expected to give a test. He didn't leave me the answer key (of course!!) and there are 2 questions on it that me and everyone else in confused on. I figured I'd pose it to the brains of this group. Thanks in advance for your help... 1. The WBC responsible for the destruction of viruses is: A. Monocytes B. Lymphocytes C. Eosonophils D. Neutrophils 2. ______________ prevents an infectious cell from undergoing mitosis. A. A lymphocyte B. A thrombocyte C. A Neutrophil D. Interferon I know SOMEONE will know the answers here, I need serious help!! I've tried Internet searches, as well as looking through their book. For #1 their book says " d, " but I had a lab tech tell me that lymphocytes destroy viruses, so I don't know what's right or wrong... Please help--this is the education of our future healthcare providers we're talking about..... Thanks, Cristi

I believe neutophils are the phages that attack viruses and I believe that interferons attach and attract WBC's to cells to attack them. So much for my retention skills. This should add some fuel to the education thread as of late. Hope it helps. Corey > > >

Guest guest
Well, back to the 'ole A & P book. My reference is Human Anatomy & Physiology (5th ed.) by Elaine N. Marieb. #1. Answer - B (Lymphocytes) (the lab-tech was right.) Ch.18 - The Blood, pgs 661-664 a. MONOCYTES - crucial in the body's defense against viruses & certain bacterial parasites. b. LYMPHOCYTES - (T Lymphocytes [Tcells]) function in the immune response by acting directly against VIRUS-infected cells & tumor cells. (B lymphocytes) - produce antibodies that are released to the blood. c. EOSINOPHILS - their most important role is to lead a counter-attack on parasite worms (ie: flatworms, round worms & hookworms) d. NEUTROPHILS - " main fighter " (the body's BACTERIAL slayers). #2. Answer - D (Interferon) Ch.22 - The Immune System, pg.799 INTERFERON - does its " dirty work " or damage in the body by invading tissue cells and taking over the cellular metabolic machinery needed to reproduce themselves. (thus, prevents mitosis) Maybe this will help answer your question. Good Luck, Parsons, AAS-Paramedicine; EMT-B (Tx); ACLS, PALS, PHTLS

I can almost teach a whole semester on Chapter 8 itself. In fact it should be a semester class. I teach out of this book at Lamar University-Orange and will continue to use these books until the writing threesome come up with an updated version.
