Guest guest
Shanah, I agree with you. I smoked for eleven years, quit cold turkey, without being pregnant. Never smoked again. I have little tolerance for cigarette smoke because it makes me feel so awful. In reality though, there are many mothers who continue to smoke while breastfeeding, those women should know that they will run a much bigger risk if they bottlefeed too. Guest guest
Dear Shanah, I think you bring up a good point -- that as parents we are obligated to create a safe and healthy environment -- and I certainly feel I have devoted myself to doing that for my children. I smoked a lot for over ten years, and then quit cold turkey when I started trying to conceive. My son was born exactly a year later and I have never smoked since. However, as someone who has worked with many, many different mothers n all sorts of situations, including homeless shelters, hospitals, prisons and most recently, preschool, I can tell you that many people will have a different definition of what " safe and healthy " means for them and their family. I can tell you, after dealing with so many different types of mothers, it is difficult to be so judgemental about their choices. Not everyone is willing to make the choice to become smoke free. Shouldn't we still encourage them to breastfeed, knowing as we do that it is the best for their baby? I do feel that until the reason that smokers have a higher rate of SIDS is fully determined, breastfeeding smokers should be very careful and should change their clothes, shower, etc., before being with their baby, including sleeping with them..At least, this is what I would do. Margaret Avoid pushing too hard. Your children are full of spirit and will find their way. Their true parent resides within them; you are only a reflection. --Vimala McClure, The Tao of Motherhood mailto:potterkim@...
