Re: DS has helmet but ears seem worse

Kathy,

Oh the ears,lol. Unfortunately most times the ears will improve some,

but not all the way. Your goal is to see enough movement in the ears

to assure that glasses will fit properly in case that comes in the

future. What concerns me is that you say the ear asymmetry has gotten

worse, this should not be the case. He has been in the band for 6

weeks, that means he started plenty young enough for good correction.

Are you seeing noticeable correction in the flatness? When banded at

his age most parents are shocked by the amount of correction in such

a short time period. Have there been any other issues with this band?

Redmarks, too loose, too tight, that sort of thing? To see the ear

problem as it changes throughout treatment look in the before and

after folders, this might help you see what you can expect. Maybe you

can post your clinic and someone else who has used it can share thier

experiences with you.

Hi Kathy,

Not all babies ears improve with the band and I would say that no

ears re-align naturally post band. Every case is different, for

example, my son's ears aligned nicely but his head shape never

improved due to lack of growth. I am concerned about 's ears

getting worse though, I don't think that I've ever heard of that

happening. I would call your ortho tomorrow and ask about the scan

numbers and see what explanation they offer.

Thanks so much to everyone who replied. has been seeing Juli at

SCOPe Orthotics in San Diego and so far everything has been good

there. I called her today to ask about his ear offset mm number

increasing and she told me that there was nothing to worry about,

that the reason she didn't discuss it with me at our appointment was

because it was inaccurate and that she should have marked it out on

the report. She said the reason it is inaccurate is because when they

put him in the scanner that his head and ears are never in exactly

the same position as previous scans. It doesn't make much sense to me

why this expensive, sophisticated machine puts out this particular

inaccurate measurement.

All I know for sure is that after the almost 6 weeks he's been

wearing his Starband, the flatness on the rear left side of his head

has much improved and we haven't had any problems with how his helmet

fits him. His ears are still misaligned but they don't appear worse

than when we started so I hope that she is right and the machine is

just wrong and my panic attack was all for naught.

Thanks again for the support...this for sure has been one stress

filled ride. You just keep telling yourself that its not life

threatening but it still breaks your heart. My happy baby boy also

has a sacral dimple and he's had to undergo an ultrasound and an mri

for that as well so I just worry about him a lot.
