Guest guest
Castor oil is a known natural laxative. When it gets into the gut, your intestines produce natural oxytocin to stimulate contractions of the gastric system to flush it out. The oxytocin can also then carry over to stimulating your uterus to contract. It's the same reason that sex can help bring on labor (a small amount of oxytocin found in semen which helps open up the cervix and let the spermies in) as well as nipple stimulation (also causes the body to produce natural oxytocin to contract the uterus and make it go back to its original shape after childbirth). Guest guest
There is also evening primerose oil... It doesnt stimulate contractions but it helps ripen the cervix. But be careful with caster oil as it could distress the baby sometimes. I wasnt aware of semen having oxytocin in it but I am aware of it having natural prostagladins (the same thing as evening primerose just in smaller amounts) Prostagladins when used directly near the cervix can help soften and ripen the cervix. Guest guest
DOH! That's the word I was looking for... prostaglandins... re-read my entire e-mail substituting the word " prostaglandins " for " oxytocin " ... hey, I had general anesthesia less than two weeks ago, so surely I'm allowed a few moments of stooopidity. <snicker> THANK YOU for correcting me!!! From what I understand, prostaglandins' effect of softening and ripening then stimulates your own body to produce natural oxytocin? Guest guest
oxytocin is secreted by the pituitary.. prostaglandins mediate a variety of things and is involved in gut motility. When one stimulats gut motility you get prostaglandin secretion.. not oxytocin. Oxytocin is in response to sexual stimulation (orgasm), especially the nipples and is involved in the let-down reflex in nursing. Castor oil and fleet suppositories are said to help bring on labor. I urge considerable caution. Let your body come to full ripeness on its own. Why do I urge caution? My own experience. I was at 39/40 weeks and just impatient. Was not impaired re: any co-morbidities . just ready to get things going. No cervical changes noted at last exam. I took castor oil and did a fleet suppository in the evening (9 pm). Castor oil is VERY hard to get down, let me tell you. 2 am I awoke to pubic symphysis pain. This was my first so I was a goof and didnt know what to look for. Went back to bed. 4 am, awoke to a strong abdominal " kick " feeling then BOOM water broke in bed.. ran to shower and that pubic symphysis pain was so bad it took my breath away every contraction. I had entire day of labor that focused pain exactly there and no where else. Got to the hospital at 5:30 am.. 4 inches dilation I failed to progress, the cervix was not ready. 5 pm they start talking about c-section. I get an epidural and then pitocin to try that before c-section. cervix still not opening. 7 pm I can finally begin to push.. 9:30 pm after 2.5 hours pushing my cervix rips and baby comes out (nurse midwife had just turned her back to get the episiotomy tools, baby not caught, landed.. close one thank you very much). my cervix was not ready.. I blame this on my pushing it. Instead of bonding with my baby, breastfeeding etc, I am rushed into surgery to stitch my cervix back together. I was swollen for more than a week after this, my whole body, because they had to load my up on a lot of IV fluids due to extensive blood loss. moral of the story: dont do these things at home.. listen to the doc and let your body take the lead. Guest guest
To anyone who is frsutrated and wants to try pushing labor onset: I know that it is so hard in the final weeks but try to remember my nightmare and just take deep breathes (ok as deep as possible) and then focus on other things. The human body is very resilient and I have not had any complications since then. I do worry about the cervix now cuz this is the first time I have been preg since but if it has issues, thats why I have a high-risk perinatologist OB/GYN! At worst I will need a cerclage. Let it go naturally. I am all for drugs during the pain but the pain- in-the-behind aspects of final pregnancy... that is our cross to bear I suppose. Nika > Wow, Nika, what a birth story! Guest guest
<<<Castor oil is a known natural laxative. When it gets into the gut, your intestines produce natural oxytocin to stimulate contractions of the gastric system to flush it out. The oxytocin can also then carry over to stimulating your uterus to contract. It's the same reason that sex can help bring on labor (a small amount of oxytocin found in semen which helps open up the cervix and let the spermies in) as well as nipple stimulation (also causes the body to produce natural oxytocin to contract the uterus and make it go back to its original shape after childbirth).>>> OH BY THE WAY, not only did I take castor oil the night before, but I had sex too! : ) LOL Shirley
Guest guest
Shoshannah, <<<Does this mean that I should stop eating raisin bran at some point later on?>>> No. Whatever is in Castor Oil or other laxative causes it. Raisin Bran is natural fiber and doesn't do that. Shirley
