What I did was to use sign as an early language and use it to teach my kids to talk as well. Whenever my kids would master a concept in sign, I went on to encourage them to use it verbally. I used fingerspelling to show the emphasis in words by fingerspelling up or down with the inflection. That being said, there were two things that gave me an advantage-- I was already fluent in sign when my kids were born and they were born hearing. My two boys lost their hearing at the age of 2.
