Guest guest
Hi everyone. I was "down for the count" for about two weeks. I was having some swallowing problems and did not eat or drink anything except a little apple sauce and I became dehydrated and lost too much weight. I was so weak I could not do anything but stay in bed and sleep. I am SOOO much better as I have gained about 10lbs. but still need about 15lbs. more. Lost down to 85lbs. and that is not good. I think I was just paranoid about chokeing. I will probably have a swallowing test done shortly. I doubt they will find anything wrong as it does not happen too often. I missed all myositis digests as I could not keep up with them and now I am wondering how everyone is. Let me know what all is going on. Guest guest
Welcome back, Sue! So sorry you've been shrinking away to nothing. Ain't it the pits to have swallowing problems at a time when otherwise you could eat just about whatever you want to gain back weight? Believe me, I can relate to the fear. Just Sunday I took a little sip of a vitamin C drink and it hit that little trigger point in my throat. Before I knew it I was coughing and spraying orange liquid all over the kitchen. Not a bit fun, especially because it hits so unexpectedly. Fortunately, no one else was around to have to watch. The time I 'bout choked on a pita sandwich (pita and PITA in both senses of the word!) was when I realized it was not a good thing for me to continue working. I was at a meeting in the offices of the Regents of the University of California (professional development for language teachers) and nearly killed myself trying not to cough bits of turkey, tomato and bean sprouts all over the table. Then I had to use my hands on the table to be able to stand up because my legs were so weak. The amazing thing is that not person noticed ... or at least they all pretended not to see that I was coughing myself silly and turning red I just couldn't take the chance, any more, of choking in public at lunch or dinner meetings. Another time I nearly choked on a sip of water in my hotel room. That one was downright scary. These episodes must have been related to stress or fatigue because it's been a long time (months). But Friday/Saturday I over-extended myself with friends and family ... and paid for it on Sunday. Gads! Years ago I had both the barium swallow and scope procedures due to a constant feeling of choking. All they could find was a bone spur in my neck that showed up again in my MRI now as " degenerative disk disease. " I wonder if the results would be any different now? It must be hard to catch the problem if it's sporadic due to muscle weakness. Stay safe ... small bites and lots of liquids. You know the drill. Eat carefully but well. Good nutrition is especially important for you now. I hope your tests show something that can be fixed! Tenayahh > Hi everyone. I was " down for the count " for about two weeks. Guest guest
Hi, Sue. So glad to hear from you again. I wondered what was going on when you stopped your email posts, but glad you're feeling better now. Wow, you sure had a rough time, didn't you. You're so skinny. Try to eat/drink some rich things, if you're able, and hopefully you'll gain some of that weight back. Hopefully the swallowing troubles are behind you. We missed you.
