I hate to say this but you won't get anything close to that down here. If I didn't need my support system here I would actually consider moving up north. I recommend you stay put and just fly down to see Dr. Rossignol when you need to. He does do phone consults. The only positive thing you will get from South Florida is the warm weather all year round.Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®Date: Fri, 30 Oct 2009 17:33:28 -0700 (PDT)To: <sList >Subject: Re: broward schools We have been looking at a similar decision , moving down to Florida from Philadelphia. We are relocating and I have no idea what the opinion is of the school system there. Here the school system is extremely difficult to work with and obtain what the student needs and write a good IEP, you pretty much need a lawyer for any disagreements. Is it like that there? Is there inclusion? I appreciate anyone's two cents, thank you. My son will be in 4th grade by the way.

I would love to move out of FL, but being that we cant, I figured relocating to Broward was a good idea. What I was originally looking for is a therapeiutic program but havent found any. here in Lee county, there is no classroom for my son. He doesnt fit in to any of the classrooms they have which boil down to an autism classroom or a behavior classroom. He needs more mental health support, he is too complex and fragile for the behavior room and too social and bored for what the autism rooms here are like because the teachers seem to make them boring and like jail cells where they are just herding the kids until the bell rings. Here its the same, you have to prove to the school why for everything and still in IEP meetings you will get lied to and spun in circles until you just want to leave the meeting. I though maybe Broward would have more inclusion or more cutting edge things happening in the school system but maybe that was Dade?

Does anyone know about Whispering Pines or any of the Broward schools therapeutic schools? Are they horrible or actually do what they say?

I think a lot also depends on your individual school. I was

surprised to see the difference a supportive staff could make. We are in Palm Beach County and have had a very positive

experience (2 years in a row). We moved from Broward with much concern because

it is much richer in outside resources but our school experience in PBC has

made it all worth while. Unfortunately, it is difficult if even possible

to know this before you make a move. L

Whispering Pines is a center school for emotional and/or behavioral disturbances, not a center school for kids with autism. Broward has 3 E/BD centers (north, central, south) and there are, I believe, 3 center schools for autism. I know of the north area (Bright Horizons) and the south (Quest).Sent from my iPhone

That's where Charter Schools come in. We provide options that public schools just can't manage. Charters are tuition free, offer a combination of services often not available within the regular ESE classrooms and have the ability to offer specialized interventions that are specific to youth on the spectrum. There are also some private schools that do the same thing. Parent power is often the driving force that helps to create these "choice options". I absolutely agree that many kids fall in "cracks" between "Autism education and Mental Health". There have been, and will continue to be, new options available, in just about every case, the options have been brought about by parents. That's why local memberships in ASA and ARC chapters are so important.

Which charter school can you recommend?Sent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: DAC@...Date: Sat, 31 Oct 2009 22:08:20 -0400To: <sList >Subject: Re: broward schools That's where Charter Schools come in. Re: broward schools I would love to move out of FL, but being that we cant, I figured relocating to Broward was a good idea. Are they horrible or actually do what they say? broward schools Can anyone pls let me know what they think of Broward public school system if your child is in special ed or has supports? We are relocating and I have no idea what the opinion is of the school system there. Here the school system is extremely difficult to work with and obtain what the student needs and write a good IEP, you pretty much need a lawyer for any disagreements. Is it like that there? Is there inclusion? I appreciate anyone's two cents, thank you. My son will be in 4th grade by the way.Windows 7: Simplify your PC. Learn more.

My Charter School is in Palm Beach, but I know of some excellent programs in Broward as well. Unfortunately, staff often makes a great difference in how children learn. Perhpas if when we end "no child left untested" in favor of "each child to the best of his/her ability" we'll see emphasis on staff development and improvement instead of buying test booklets.

Are these organizations separate and distinct from Broward schools? Do they share funding in any way? Or does either receive funds of any reason from the school district? Just curious.

Hi Clara,

Welcome to Broward County. There are a few schools here depending on the area you are located in that genuinely care for our special kids and follow a good iep. Those are the exceptions. I would not go into any, I repeat, any meeting either a staffing, iep, or teacher consult without an advocate. With huge budget cuts there aren't enough para professionals to assist with full inclusion, and most schools consider inclusion as being in the same lunch room or playground time as other students. There were changes being made somewhat but that flew out the window with the economic distress. There is a parent ese advisory meeting monthly - the 3rd monday of the month - in the evening and there are dedicated parent professionals that can help you. I don't know how functional your child is but there are opportunities for socialization etc with the various organizations including this forum. Good luck.

Try going to Legal Aid. I don't think Ann Siegel is there anymore (congrats Ann!) but there are excellent attorneys there to help you. Its in Broward Cty and depending on your financial situation there is usually no fee or a small one.

My son is 8 and in hospital homebound program...I need an attorney to write an IEP and disagreements are common. Meetings are hard to schedule and to prove anything you have to major documentation and evaluations. ..and still they will deny. If I could move I would...but I have yet to hear of anywhere that is better. Maybe its because when you have it good there is nothing to say...We are going to court,if I can find an attorney that I can afford, but I really don't know what it will accomplish since I will be asking for something they don't offer...an actual education without me being the one to tell them how to do it. broward schools
