I didn't expect it to be smelly already! I've been cleaning it with

alcohol each night... is this normal? We've only had it 5 days. Also,

how did your little ones adjust to sleeping in their bands? We've had

some sleepless nights. Please tell me it gets better!! :)

You might want to try letting the alcohol sit for a little bit before wiping it out. It takes at least 30 seconds for alcohol to kill the bacteria. We put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. We spray the helmet when we take it off for the bath, and wipe it out with a paper towel when the bath is complete, although it is almost always nearly dry by then. This seems to control the smell pretty well. We also clean Georgia's head with witchhazel (Tucks hemoroid pad) at bath time.

Have you tried to let it dry in the sun - or outside? We did that. Also, I would rub a little bit of J & J baby powder that was "Time Release" so it kept it "fresh"! :-)

Stinky Helmet

Any suggestions on what else I can do to stop the stink from the

helmet?! I've been using alcohol, albiet the 70%, I guess I need to

get 90! I clean it at least twice daily, and I put baby powder on his

head. He's only on week two, so he's still sweating, but it is getting

a little better. Just wondering if there's any other tricks? Because,

even after I clean it thoroughly and I'm pressing really firm and

scrubbing like the ortho said, it's still a little smelly!

Thanks,

Most bands are cleaned only with alcohol. You can get 91% which is

stronger and helps with the stink. We poured it on a washcloth and

scrubbed the band really hard. If you can put it in the sun to dry

that helps too - but works better in summer :-) Make sure the band

and daughter's head are dry before putting it back on. Wash your

daughter's hair daily with mild shampoo (unless she gets too dry).

Also try to keep her cool enough so she's not sweaty.

And even after you do all that it may stink a little :-)

Some people also recommend smelly shampoo like Loreal Kids fruit

scented ones, but we didn't use these because my daughters skin is a

little sensitive.

I hope Lily's head is round quickly.

We always wiped it down with 91% rubbing alcohol and then let it air out - sometimes in the sun.

I would also sprinkle a little J & J freshness time release baby powder and rub that around in a dry helmet - It seemed to help too.

Hello!

I just joined the group this evening. A very nice mother in the same

orthotics office as I gave me the info on this site. Tomorrow will be

1 week that my 6 mo old Lily has had her helmet and it already stinks.

We have been washing it with baby soap and sometimes rubbing alcohol.

Is there anything to get rid of the smell?

Thanks

Hey- We wash his helmet every night even it's not that stinky . We use rubbing alcohol and we usually wipe some baby powder on his head if it's really warm out. Soap and water takes too long and our orthotist said that the rubbing alcohol will kill off all the germs- if it's sunny out he said to put in the sun for a while too.Hope this helps!lisa mom of Damian 7 months old- StarbandJenandLuli@... wrote: We always wiped it down with 91% rubbing alcohol and then let it air out - sometimes in the sun.I would also sprinkle a little J & J freshness
