I got diagnosed Dec 27th with Hashimoto's. My irregular (3mths) then absent periods (4mths) brought me to the Doctor. 2wks after being on Synthroid my periods returned. Whether they will be messed up next month I have yet to find out. Hopefully someone on the board can give you some advice..... This Hashimotos surely does mess up ones body thats for sure.

Any form of thyroid problem can cause those problems, when you're hypo or hyper, people with either of those for any reason can experience what you're describing. It has to do with the body's lack or excess of hormones in one area, then it throws the whole horomone (endocrine hormone at least) system off whack. Once you get on the right dose of medication to treat the thyroid, the menstrual symptoms will (should, unless there's another problem) resolve on their own. I have been hypo for several years now (8, I think was my final determination based on the symptoms that have gone away so far, been on Synthroid since September) and I've had heavy, blod clotted, bad PMS, periods the whole time. The last period was closer to normal, but still had a lot of clotting, though the cramps weren't nearly as bad. Just curious, are you taking Allegra or Allegra-D (antihistamines and the second with a decongestant)? Those cause terrible menstural cramps with me when I take them, it's even a known side effect. Even if I, for example, end a period today, then take it tomorrow for allergies, then the next month when I get my period, Bam! the cramps are there. Just a thought, anyway.

Hi everyone,Ladies, I'm wondering if you can tell me if you've hador are having a similar experience to mine...

I have Hashimotos and haven't yet found a doc to treatme (I see a new one in Feb so I'm hopeful) - anyway, Iwas really hyperthyroid in summer 2004 and then at thebeginning of 2005, I started going hypothyroid. Now I

think I'm going hyper again in the past couplemonths....When I was hyper before, my periods weren't anyheavier than usual and they lasted about 5 days, butthey came closer and closer together...for a couple

months, I got it every 17 days. Then, as I startedgoing hypo, my periods came every 28 days (back tonormal) and lasted about 5 days, but they were heavierand I was much crampier and PMS'ed terribly....

Now that I seem to be going hyper again (the past 2months), I've got my period at 26 days, they last forabout 5-6 days and I stop bleeding for 1-2 days andthen I have clots for a day or so and have what seems

to be another full period - like 2 a month, withcramps, bloating and everything....this happened to melast month and is happening again right now...Ithought my period had ended and it did for a coupledays - now I'm cramping and bleeding again.

Any thoughts/experiences/advice? What should I do? I'mso tired of all these problems!! Thanks forlistening... M.__________________________________________________

laura m.,

The only thing I found to work at keeping mensturation fairly regular and that cut the PMS stuff was to take a high quality B-Comples 100 that contained all the B vitamins. When on them my cycle was regular, cramps eased up and I was no longer PMSing... Of course the closer I got to menopause and with the worsening Hashimoto's, nothing helped!!!!

Hi ,

No, I don't take any allergy meds...I appreciate your

response. Even when I do find a doc to treat me, I'm

not sure what he/she will do because I'm not

continually hyper or hypo...I'm going back and forth

and I feel like crap. So I'm just frustrated...it's

nice to know I'm not alone. These " female " problems

that I've been having are the most frustrating...I'm

only 29 and I'll probably never be able to have kids,

I'm guessing...*sigh*

Thanks for listening,

M.

I'm 26, soon to be 27. Keep your chin up...maybe they'll get you straightened out so you can have kids. Or, maybe your body will stabilize enough during pregnancy that it will work.

Hi ,

Since you can't get into an endo until February, I was wondering if

you had a gyno to talk to about this?

I have Hashi's and saw my obgyn when my periods started to get longer

and heavier.

While I've opted for a " watch and wait " approach...b/c at this point

it's not hugely inconvenient...some options I was given were:

1) an ultrasound to check on the uterine build up. If it was thick

than a d & c was an option.

2) going back on the pill to regulate the cycle and to keep the

lining from build up.

I'm still playing w/ the dose of Levoxyl I'm supposed to be on but as

I get to closer to where it's supposed to be, my periods seem to be

getting shorter and not quite as heavy.

Also, don't give up on the idea of getting pregnant. I know of

several women who've had babies once their thyroid problems were

treated correctly. It's all a delicate balance.
