From Merck The determination of total serum T3 levels in hypothyroidism deserves mention. In addition to primary and secondary hypothyroidism, other conditions are characterized by decreased circulating levels of total T3; these include decreased serum TBG, the effects of some drugs (see above), and the euthyroid sick syndrome due to acute and chronic illness, starvation, and low carbohydrate diets (see above for discussion of euthryroid sick syndrome). In more severe hypothyroidism, both serum T3 and T4 levels are decreased. However, many patients with primary hypothyroidism (elevated serum TSH, low serum T4) may have normal circulating levels of T3 probably caused by sustained TSH stimulation of the failing thyroid, resulting in preferential synthesis and secretion of the biologically active hormone T3. Also from Merck it talks about edemic goiter meaning you may be getting Armour from food..namley ground beef.. But your TSH is fine your T3 is fine.. JMO but your T4 wit hthose other two numbers should be closer to 17-18?? This would mean you have a failing thyroid and your body is doing its job to try and maintain levels.. Tried to keep this clear as mud so I hope you understand.. Kats3boys

Guest guest
Thanks kats3boys, I am sort of having the same feeling but its just a vague feeling and has no scientific proof. Guest guest
Hi, For me, my Free T3 and Free T4 have to be in the upper ranges for me to function close to where I was before all this hit me (Hashi's). When I look at your numbers I am seeing you at the bottom of the ranges. How are you feeling? with these Free Tx numbers... As for the TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), Remember, this hormone is put out by the Pituatary gland to stimulate the Thyroid gland to produce more of what the Pituatary gland thinks it needs... (To me, not the most reliable test to see how the Thyroid gland is doing with the production of its own hormones.) Gossimer > > Hi, I have just had my lab results. Guest guest
Again, Oz Jane, all I can offer is that my lab numbers were good all the way up to surgery. And all, but one little spot on each lobe, was dead. Lab numbers just don't tell the whole story. My suggestion is you find a doc that will do a scan on it - ultrasound or a thyroid uptake scan that you go nuclear for, and it shows what part of the gland is working, and what part isn't, and if there's a part that's doing hyper. I'm wondering if you can be stronger with your docs ? I'm reminded of my older sister telling me, when I was 13, that I no longer asked mom if I could do something, I was to tell mom what I was doing.(bless older sisters, she also convinced mom to let me wear hose/nylons) To me, that would mean going back to the doc and saying : I really want more idone to this, I'm uncomfortable with your dx, It will help my peace of mind if you order a scan for me. Or going to another doc, but be more forceful and upfront. I don't know, maybe I'm reading you wrong. Use me as an example : I know someone whose numbers were good all the way up to surgery etc. Maybe if you find an endo who treats thyroid cancer, he or she would take you more seriously. Did I tell you hubby and I plan to visit Oz this October ? He has kin in Sydney, I have a friend near Adelaide. Hubbys grandpa emigrated from Cornwall to the US, his brother to Oz. Family's stayed in touch all this time. jane U.S. aka Bush country, whose Vice President shot someone in a hunting accident. Now, even Ford didn't do that !! > > Hi, I have just had my lab results. Guest guest
Kat What are you talking about, about getting " Armour from food, mainly ground beef " ?? Are you/they saying that calves' thyroids are being ground up to make ground beef? I'm thinking that this is illegal, if this is what you're talking about. Lol, clear as mud. With your T3 I would not try for Armour though..lets just try and get you on T4 and see if the conversion slows.. the doc seeing Synthroid raise your T4 and hopefully reduce the goiter would be more receptive to treating the thyroid with your numbers.. I know the first thing my doc did after doing an ultrasound on the goiter was want to start a trial dose of T4 to see if it would help shrink the goiter..this of course was before my labs came back with a T4 of 18 with 11-19 as the range..and the endo said no way.. But your T4 has lots of room to move up and would still be range to keep the doc happy, so maybe some suggestive hints on T4 is in order.. Your T4 is at the lower end of the range.. You have a goiter in which T4 therapy can help shrink.. You have hypo thyroid symptoms..( do not re inforce hypo/hyper) Why would the doctor not want to try you on T4 replacement medication even if it is because you bug him enough to let you try it that he does it to shut you up.. Also Edemic goiter happens when Iodine is added or increased in the food supply. I know Australia has had controversity over it and everytime WHO( world health organization) steps into a country and starts tinkering with the iodine supply thyroid related illnesses increase 10 fold.. The problem is those with sleeping thyroid problems all get woken up at once.. they vaildate this is only effecting less than 5% of the population and is good fore the other 95% of the population.. So if iodine was recently added to feed or to grains then you would have an edemic goiter..mind you edemic means she would not be the only one..but if thyroid related illnesses are increasing her community with out and definite auto immune then this could be the cause.. Guest guest
-Well.... US Jane - You are pretty spot on. Hard to speak your mind when its the family Dr and she is glaring you in the face. She wants one more test done - oespharigus check for reflux - so will do that then go back and try your suggestions. I would feel happier if a scan has been done. In the middle of a crisis here with my 13yo dog just having a stroke this morning and my elderly father in last stages of lung cancer. Its hard to keep focussed on 'me' sometimes. Guest guest
You have a burden to bear Aussie Jane, I feel for you. I will remember your family in my prayers. I am more comfortable when I make an appt just to talk with my doc. I have gone back to her 5 times or so for that. I too can get intimidated. Then I go home and think about it, get what I want to say and do, then go back to her just for that. Last time is she thought, what we now know was thyroiditis, she thought it might be a panic attack - organic in origin. I was pretty out of it when in that thyroiditis week. But I went back the next week just to say " I'm uncomfortable with panic attack as a dx cuz we made that mistake before with my pulmonary emboli. " I find her more approachable when I'm jsut there to talk. It may help that she's been my doc for 17 yrs and after my PE in '99 I've gone in a lot of times, when I sneeze, I say, but not really. But enough that there's a familiarity. But my doc is an ice queen. I have to open the conversation doors. After 17 yrs of being her patient, when i found out this was cancer, she put a hand on my shoulder, that was the first touch she's done with me outside of clinical pokes and probes. Now, I extend my hand to shake, makes it a little more personal, breaks an ice that's there. Be sure to let me know when you do get it looked at more, and how you finally get it done. I go in for my 3 month post surgery neck ultrasound this week. Cancer was found in veins in the thyroid, and the next place those nasty buggers would go is lymphs in the neck, so we go a hunting for them, bring on the hounds ! If they do find anything, it probably means more surgery. ok, i'm staying in this moment, not going to the possible surgery in the future. I dont know that yet, I stay in this moment. I'd hate to get set back again from another surgery. I'm just starting to get where I can get some stuff donw around this house, something opened up in my mind, and it's like - yeh, I can do the laundry and clean off the clutter on the tables and shred documents. It actually might be time to make task lists again !!!!!! Glory hallelujan !!!! Still not getting to bed early tho, evenings help me release the emotional part of the last 3 months - cancer and all. It kinda shook my world. jane u.s. > > -Well.... US Jane - You are pretty spot on. Hard to speak your mind > when its the family Dr and she is glaring you in the face.
