Pam -- I found the dietician to be of no help whatsoever. After the first

three days in the hospital, we stopped consulting with her -- and haven't

spoken to her since. Its absolutely possible to do the diet without a

dietician -- if you have a neuro who can run blood tests when necessary. We

do consult with a nutritionist/naturopath, but not about the keto diet.

We've been on the diet two-plus years.

Dear Pam,

I'm on the Atkins diet too and have been for about 18 months, however my

diet is unmonitored by medical staff/dieticians etc apart from regular

blood-level checks. I've had various types of seizures during the past

forty years, though none grand mals.

In recent years I've become more inquisitive and nosey about various

aspects of epilepsy with the medical fraternity, with some remarkable

lessons along the way, anyway...........

Prior to becoming seizure-free, and now aura-free, I discovered and to

some extent had it supported by my neurologist that seizures can be

triggered during the heat of the summer months, even in the UK lol. Also,

another likely time of day when seizures may occur is in the evenings, like

when you're winding down from the day in the lounge or whatever.........

Both of the above seemed to be consistent with the main pattern of my

seizures.

Nowadays, as most in the group may know, my seizures are controlled not

only by meds but by a Vagus Nerve Stimulator and some crude form of the

Atkins diet,

I hope that helps in some way,

Best wishes,

Phil

Help!

Hello

My son , who was diagnosed with absence szs in Aug, has been on the

Atkins diet (neuro said " no " to ketogenic diet, but " yes " to atkins) now

since about January. Before Atkins he had 2-4 szs per hour even on meds.

He went seizure free the very first day of ketosis and was sz-free or

mostly sz free until about a month or two ago. He is sz free all day

until about dinner time when he will have clusters of szs, one after

another after another after another. I don't know if it is related to

blood sugar, but does anyone have any thoughts? It could be related to

heat as well since it is now hot and he plays outside just prior to

dinner. Definitely heat is a trigger for , but even if he stays

inside the cool house he will cluster in the evenings now.

I have been trying to keep a diary, but life has been so crazy since the

fire (we lost our home in the large San Diego fire and are still fighting

with insurance company before we can rebuild, we just had our baby girl 2

weeks ago (child #11 for us) and she ended up in the hospital with

meningitis this past week plus my father has just been diagnosed with end

stage prostate and bone cancer). I haven't kept up with the diary since

the baby was born.

has been drug free since he started the Atkins, but I am thinking

about trying other drugs as suggested by the neuro (although neuro said

our likelihood of finding any that work is practically nil, hence the

Atkins diet). I am also thinking about pushing the neuro to refer us to

the keto diet, but life has been so up in the air I am thinking it will

be too hard (although the atkins is very hard already). It just seems

that if a pill could work, it would be better than the diet. (but of

course no pills have worked, only added to our troubles). Aack--I am at

such a loss at what to do these days!

I am also mad and worried that we do not have a dietician to help us with

either Atkins or Keto diet. is getting so thin and frail looking.

He was already small for his age, now he is even smaller. I worry about

his health. Does your keto team dietician help you a lot or a little?

Or does it depend on the team? Do you have access to the dietician more

than just at induction? I am trying to see how much help a dietician

would be.

I can use any help and encouragement you can give me. Thanks in advance

Pam McD
