Unless you have a heart condition of some sort, or have artificial

joints, or replaced heart valves; you won't need antibiotic

premedication. In short, if your MD hasn't prescribed antibiotic

premedication for the above, or any other reason; you won't need it.

I'm a dental hygienist, and we deal with this every day. Nick

Same warning for those of us with problems with lymphedema.. the bacteria/infection dose spread and measures need to be taken before hand to reduce the risk...

Hey.. that reminds me someone asked about lymph and I don't think I answered that post yet... need to go looking! hehehe

Hi all!I've been told I have to get one of the periodontal cleanings, and have been hearing that one should take anti-biotics to make sure all the gucky bacteria doen't enter the system. I've heard of folks getting heart trouble and dying after getting their teeth cleaned. What do you think?~E:)

would it be a problem to have the dentist/doctor give it to me anyway just to be safe since my immune system was low before? i'm having dental work done this summer and i had to wait until my body was well enough for it. would my doc prescribe this or could the dentist?

The dentist prescribes the anti-biotics. After my sister had the

endocarditis and the heart valve replacement I was really scared that

something would happen to me. I called my dentist when I had a

cleaning coming up and he said if I wanted he would give me a dose of

antibiotics to be sure. I decided in the long run not to but he did

offer and was very helpful in explaining everything to me.

HOpe this helps. nne

Thanks nne,

I think to be on the safe side, I will ask for these when I have every thing done. Because extra protection never hurts :).

Generally the MD prescribes antibiotic premedication to cover the

problem he is monitoring you for. Occasionally the DDS can prescribe

also, but generally the reason you're needing the antibiotic has to do

with the problem your MD is watching you for.

Ask either one to see if they'll prescribe it for you. It's their

call. Without a bonafide reason, they " may " not. Nick
