Bauduin runs by the Broward school district schedule, no more, no less. All days off throughout the year are the same for Bauduin as a Broward County public school. Any extra weeks mentioned during the summer are optional and parents are charged a fee for. At one time they tried to get a grant to run a full summer program but they were not able to get the funds. Broward County schools fund the Bauduin program so they certainly would'nt run a longer summer school than the other public schools.. Transportation is a large cost and apparently they were able to save some money

by cutting it down one day.

True. But the reality is once you get into elementary school the so called "extended school year" is not really an "extension" when it runs so little days throughout the summer. Plus most kids are forced to go to another school as most public schools are closed for the whole summer. By the time the kids get adjusted then the session is over with another long break before the school year begins. And lastly the program is not runned like the regular school year, they don't really work on your child's IEP goals. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think they offer speech or OT during the summer either? So what tends to happen? We get them enrolled in a good summer program or camp where at least we know they will be in a structured, productive environment. This of couse costs money but for me I'd rather keep my kid's summer consistent than go thru all the poorly designed summer public school changes. That is the sad reality. Honestly I think ALL of our kids should get schooling all year round with few minimal breaks. These kids really need it and would benefit from it.

I hate to say this but once your kids reach elementary school your summer options will be worse. The public schools offer NO extra days aside from whatever ESY your child qualifies. Plus their summer program is not runned as nicely as Bauduin. At that point you will most likely have to look for a summer camp or program that runs for most of the summer and in most cases it will be expensive though some offer limited financial assistance. Enjoy your Bauduin days, I wish they had an elementary program.

My daughter received the same (5 weeks, June 29-July 31) at Baudhuin. Also, 4 days a week, from 8-12. The truly sad part is, is that we had to pay to cover the remainder 6 weeks of summer. There was no way she could not go to school. We sent her to Reaching Potentials in Boca, MWF from 9-2:30...all for the low, low cost of about $5,000...out of our savings. We were reimbursed from Humana about $1,700 and are awaiting the rest of our money. As far as I know, Baudhuin did not offer the Friday option.

My son has a complete ESY program including 1:1 for 2 hours a day after the ESY day [note from the moderator: the writer is not in Florida].. then 2 hours a day during the 'off time' done in home until school starts. Of course this is obviously because they don't want to argue anything I request after paying so much in attorneys fees over the years they could have a winter vacation home for staff on Cape Cod instead ! It takes perseverance and the will to never quit to succeed in fighting for our children..and I think it comes somewhat natural for some of us. ESY being thought to be only to 'stop any regression or if the child is regressing' is simply words made up by someone at one point that wanted to cut his/her budget. ESY is part of any IEP and should be made to individually fit the child even if it includes some in home

time during that long off season and an extension to the regular time lines on the class day. This obviouisly doesn't happen often by 'asking' .. it happens by fighting for it... and if it's worth it.. which our children are ... i''ll fight for it everytime. I know I had to have filed at least 50 due process's for ESY alone...challenging only that area of the education making the defense have little to offer to prove provision of FAPE in the LRE. Many times we don't get exactly what we want.. but then again... in coming to a 'consesnus' means all parties are reasonable and bend somewhere or we end up with an unsigned IEP and if done properly immediately into due process and into a resolution and mediation that should end the dispute. ESY is simply not there to 'stop regression' It's there as a mandate to the SEA's to provide as 'education' to ANY that request it. E. ,

Honestly I think ALL of our kids

should get schooling all year round with few minimal breaks. These kids really need it and would benefit from it.

, all Broward schools offered 5 and 7-week long programs (most of them don't

open at all for summer, though, and the kids get sent to the " feeder " schools in

their community). It's for all the public schools in the district, nothing

particular about Baudhuin's summer program. What they did offer was the Fridays'

off for a fee of $60/Friday. It wasn't the same program though, not even with

the same teachers or classrooms since they obviously didn't have as many kids. I

decided against it and don't know of anyone who tried it, so I have no

feedback...

, all Broward schools offered 5 and 7-week long programs (most of them don't

open at all for summer, though, and the kids get sent to the " feeder " schools in

their community). It's for all the public schools in the district, nothing

particular about Baudhuin's summer program. What they did offer was the Fridays'

off for a fee of $60/Friday. It wasn't the same program though, not even with

the same teachers or classrooms since they obviously didn't have as many kids. I

decided against it and don't know of anyone who tried it, so I have no

feedback...

That's the way it should be except in Florida the school district doesn't care how much they spend to fight an issue. In Broward County the week was shortened from five days to 4 days per week. I don't think there was enough time to legally challenge it. Heifferon

ESY is part of any IEP and should be made to individually fit the child even if it includes some in home time during that long off season and an extension to the regular time lines on the class day. E. , Sr.
