Guest guest
a Yes that is alot 3 hours... of course most of us would take as many as we could get. We now only have one hour a week group speech. Duting early intervention though we got 2 hours a week. I believe that pragmatics is a test of his social conversation. The give and take. Don't quote me on this though. Glad you got started and good luck with everything. I hope the time passes quickly for you.
Guest guest
Hi a! Glad to hear it went well. CAPD is Central Auditory Processing Disorder (or Dysfuntion). It simply means he's not getting everything that is said to him. Very common in kids with autism. Pragmatics is kind of like social language. Another area very common for autistic kids to have trouble in. You are sooooo lucky to get 3 hours of speech a week!! My son was denied it for 4 years and is now only getting 40 to 60 minutes a week through the school! Sue

I would have been THRILLED with 40-60 minutes a week. only gets 20 minutes a week and we're LUCKY to get that!! The only reason she gets the extra 5 minutes (she's supposed to get 15) is because the speech pathalogist likes me and we email back an forth on a regular basis. Something that got me yesterday it just blew me away because it is so rare to see, my neighbors little girl was here to walk to school and my son was watching the Wiggles on tv. The song " Wags the Dog " came on and said " Ooh, I love that song. " and Ethan calmly sat down and looked at the tv (not at her, of course) and said " Yeah, my sister does too. It was just neat to see him come out of his own head for just that moment and put himself in his sister's place. > > You are sooooo lucky to get 3 hours of speech a week!! The person whose child is getting 3-4 hours of speech a week is very fortunate! Jake gets an hour a week at school, but I think being around the other kids is helping as well. He's always saying new words to me now that I have to do some detective work to figure out what he's talking about - must be things at school I guess. Make sure they understand that he's suspected to be autism spectrum (whoever does the CAPD testing). Since they knew the school said that wasn't autistic (at that time) they passed him on the testing....he scored the lowest average score in all 5 areas. What I think they looked for in him was if he could tell them what he had heard, not whether he processed what he heard. can repeat what is said to him when he hears it, but doesn't always have a meaning to go with the words. > > > Something that got me yesterday it just blew me away because it is so > rare to see, my neighbors little girl was here to walk to school and > my son was watching the Wiggles on tv. Guest guest
So glad it went well. Jacquie H ARD Meeting today I experienced my very first ARD meeting today, and I think I worried excessively for nothing. =0> The ladies I spoke with were very nice and made sure I understood everything step by step. This ARD meeting was just for Speech as it was set up before I had Ethan seen by a private psychologist and we got the autism diagnosis. Ethan has trouble with nearly all the consonant sounds it seems and the speech pathologist wants to see him twice a week for a total of 3 hours a week. Is this a lot? I told them whatever they thought was necessary as it could only be helpful at this point. My two year old often speaks more clearly than Ethan does at six. We went through the psychologist's report that I turned in to them and they aren't going to " do " anything with it until the psychologist and autism team for the school district can see Ethan and do some more testing. The ARD committee just said that they " received and accept the diagnosis of autism. " The psychologist/autism team has 60 days in which to see Ethan. More waiting!! It took a whole semester to get this far. They want to run several more tests on Ethan including pragmatics (what is this, please, anyone? She explained it to me but in the flood of information it got lost!) and test him for CAPD and some other things I can't remember right now. I'll get a copy of everything we discussed in about a week. We made a behavior plan for Ethan. The teacher listed excitability, anxiety, overattentiveness, and social skills as the behaviors they wanted to work on. I'll know/remember more when I get my copies from the meeting next week. I just wanted to say " I made it through! " LOL Thanks, a
