Guest guest
> Hi Phyllis: My 6 year old daughter also has a bit of difficulty with licking a lolly or an ice cream cone. I am still learning all about apraxia. (What it is, what does it mean, what type of therapy, etc.) I now understand apraxia is a neurological motor/speech planning disorder and causes difficulty coordinating oral-motor movements. I have found, for my daughter, that having 1:1 speech therapy works the best along with 1:1 OT. When I work with my daughter at home I would make up games with lollypops to make it fun. (My daughter's private OT gave me some beginning ideas such as putting peanut butter, pudding, (anything that you think your child would like) on the bottom lip and see if your child can touch the food with their tongue.) With my daughter, I use positive reinforcement, love and encouragment all the time. I wish you the best of luck and welcome to the group. Everyone is extremely supportive, as I am fairly new to the group as well.
Guest guest
thanks for the info - I already rec'd the first three videos of baby bumble bee and Nicolas seems to like them alot too. The LeapFrog videos the Word Factory and Letter Factory have helped him tremendously with sounds. He can say all the sounds of the alphabets, but not the letters - why I'm not sure??? Thanks again. Guest guest
Hi, Phyllis - My son, also, cannot stick his tongue out or lick a lollipop or ice cream (even if he liked sweet stuff which, thankfully, he doesn't! go figure - I can't live without ice cream!). Part of the problem is the motor planning involved with the act of sticking out your tongue - it might be that the neuro message is either getting garbled along the way (oral apraxia) or the message might be coming through loud and clear but the muscles are not responding appropriately (possibly dysarthria). In our son's case, it's possibly both to some extent. Has your son been diagnosed with verbal and oral apraxia or has there been a diagnosis of dysarthria by any chance? (of course, other people might suggest other possibilities of what might be the reason for the inability but these are just a couple of thoughts). Josh's SLP has been working on the tongue thing and he actually stuck his tongue out at me about a week ago or so - hasn't been able to do it since (the apraxia at work). So, we keep working. Sherry Ratliffp@... wrote: Hi, My name is Phyllis and I have a son, Nicolas, that is 3yrs 10mths and has been dx w/Apraxia. I had him evaluated at the Uof Miami a couple of months ago for autism and am supposed to get the results next week. After reading the various messages, I have learned a lot and have ordered the book The Late Talker I think it is. My questions are do any of your children have problems with licking lets say an ice cream or lollipop. My son can't get the concept nor can he stick out his tongue the same way??? This is baffling. He is in an ESE classroom for autism and receives speed 2X a week for 30 minute sessions with three other children. Currently, he has about 6-8 words that I understand -- possibly 3 intelligible words to others. I am hoping once I get the final results to receive 1-1 speech therapy for him. Any advice or comments will be greatly appreciated.

Guest guest
Hello ! I have a 2.5 month (almost 3 month) old son, and I also have BC/BS/NJ. THey denied me already and I am in the appeal process. Apparently STAR is in network, so they will probably cover a STARBAND, but not a DOC band from CT. I started with CT and like them, so I will probably stay with them and hopefully just get out of network coverage from BCBS. That way, it would not be so much $. I live further south, but I know that BUY BUY Baby in Paramus has an artist there that paints the bands. Once it is painted, the paint is there for good, I believe. They use some sort of sealer to keep the art work on it. What were you thinking of doing? I might do a baseball theme. NY Yankees even > Hello Everyone, > Just wanted to introduce myself. Guest guest
, Welcome! What a good age to start a band, you should see awesome correction. You don't have to paint the band. I used stickers from the craft store and I am not really crafty at all. Have fun. You have to do those exercises often and daily. Trust me I speak from experience. Even if you both hate them it will be the only thing to correct the torticollis. If the tort. is not treated you will not receive good correction with the band either as tort likes to cause facial asymmetry and will contribute to pressure on the flat side. Keep trying to get them in 5 times a day and just give lots of hugs and kisses afterwards, they will not hate you for it and they will never remember it when they get older, unless you don't do them and then you will continue to have trouble. If you are really overwhelmed with it, you can ask your ped. to refer you to physical therapy. Are you doing lots of tummy time play? It is really important and will also help the tort. Let me know if you need any advice with it, CAROLG > Hello Everyone, > Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is and I > live in Hillsborough, NJ. Guest guest
No, you said something funny. Unless I took it the wrong way. " Fight with us....fight for our kids " Unless you meant fight alongside us. I took it to mean, fight with us on the list.... because you know that stuff happens occasionally. Nevermind, I'm on my first cup of coffee!! LOL. I just found it funny as all get out when I read it. > > DID I SAY something wrong? Guest guest
> Welcome Greg, It's great that you feel our fight. One thing you need to be aware of is that it is not just mercury in the vaccines that is causing the problems. Many of these vaccines are made with human aborted fetal cells, gmo yeast, recombined human and animal dna, aluminum, formaldehyde, antibiotics, complete viral cells instead of partial viral cells, and the list goes on.What are the mercury free flu shots preserved with? Also, a person whose immune system is compromised to begin with will probably have an auto-immune response to any vaccine. A better solution is to strengthen the immune systems of Americans by letting them take a nosode if they get exposed to a disease that is a threat.Talk to any naturopathic doctor and they will tell you all about nosodes. It mind boggles me that the govt pooh, poohs this type of treatment when the Founders of Boston University Medical Ctr had doctors bags full to the brim with homeopathic remedies. It's all about the almighty dollar and they don't care 2 cents about our kids. Also you don't need a nosode for every disease exposure. Most people handle these diseases jsut fine or never get them. If a 4 month old is exposed to pertussis, I may use a nosode. But most infants and adults do just fine.
