Is it beta or bicarb? Bicarb levels show when you get too

acidotic. The lower the level, the more acidotic. I think " normal "

non-keto levels are in the 20s. Our doctor likes to see keto kids

at around 16-17. Below 10 is critical. Too low or too high can

cause seizures. I don't know the other dangers of too high bicarbs

but know that too low can cause respiratory distress, coma, kidney

problems and even death (I know this b/c we have been hospitalized

twice b/c of low bicarbs).

Don't know if I helped or just confused things more! In any event,

sorry you are having such problems. But welcome to a wonderful

group!

Hi ,

Do you mean beta-hydroxybuturate levels? If so, this is the measure of

ketone levels in the bloodstream. As opposed to the urine ketones which, as

your dietician says, are not horribly accurate, (too many variables like

fluid consumed diluting the measurement, time between emptying the bladder

each time etc) but they are still an overall indication of where the level

of ketosis is.

Those figures you are quoting below are nothing like the ones we use

though, perhaps a different lab - measuring system?

Our home meter measures from 0 up to 6.0, with 's optimum blood

ketone (also termed bhb - beta-hydroxybuturate) level between 3.5 and 4.5,

but this varies from child to child.

If you are talking about BHB, then the reading must be 2.7, not 27.

Most kids are at 4.0 to 6.0, ideally, so that would make sense. We

have a blood ketone machine that we use at home- we had a

prescription for it but were able to buy it over the counter. It

also tests glucose, which can be helpful for finetuning. The blood

ketone strips are PRICEY, though, so we use them sparingly. The

machine is made by Medisense. I don't have it here and can't

remember the exact name of it but many people here use them so I am

sure someone else will pipe up. If not, I can give you the name

tonight.
