Hi US Jane - You are starting to scare me ! Lots of symptoms of

Thyroid cancer. Blood testing has shown nothing ( yet). 30 year

history but suddenly worse last months. Also suddenly worse since my

last small op. Wondered if the tubing during op has done anything.

.. I keep telling myself its probably a throat infection but its just

that it doesn't feel like any throat infection I have ever had before.

And trouble with swallowing is really quite bad. At the goitre.Also

getting a pain there - hard to describe - but a tingly sort of pain.

Dr argued the case that my windpipe ( and breathing ) would be

affected first - before swallowing probs. But on all the sites I don't

see 'trouble breathing' as one of them ????

Did your ca show up with a Scan or was it later with a biopsy ?

Hi Oz Jane. I don't want to scare, but the possibility of cancer

does that. I wish 2 yrs ago when doc first felt my thyroid

enlarged, that I would have had it imaged. I wish doc would have

known to do that. My blood level came back normal, so nothing more

was done. Blood level was normal right up to surgery, even though

the poor thing was dying and only a small spot in each side churning

out hormone. So, I think one thing I can do is tell others to get

their thyroid imaged when suspect something wrong. Tell your doc it

would help your peace of mind to have it imaged.

The thyroid uptake scan showed large areas in both lobes that

weren't working, and a small hyper part. It didn't show cancer, but

it indicated something wasn't right. My biopsy showed maybe cancer,

maybe not. With those tests, and cuz the size of the goiter, and it

was narrowing the throat pipe(what is that, the esophagus?) it was

decided it would come out. It was the post op pathology that found

cancer. It was amazing, cuz there was a huge area of cancer in one

lobe, but the 6 sticks in biopsy in that lobe didn't get it.

This all started because I was in the ER with breathing and heart

rates too far up, when the Cat scan found my large thyroid,

accidentally, they were looking for abdominal stuff. When the ER

doc saw the thyroid in the Cat scan, he said my high respiration

rate might be because any narrowing of the wind pipe that showed on

the scan, the body goes - I can't breathe, I can't breathe. So,

yes, breathing problems are a part. As it turns out, I was having

thyroiditis from hell in the ER, the breathing and heart rate

cleared up 4 or 5 days later, just as mysteriously as it started.

It wasn't from the narrowing of the windpipe.

When was your operation? Intubation does effect the throat, but

should clear up within a time frame.

-Hi US Jane, To answer last question first - my op was 4 weeks ago.

Soreness has been increasing last 2 weeks. Although had it before as I

raised my concerns to Dr re poss tubing.

I guess if there is narrowing of the oespharigus there is more chance

of a graze ? And local infection ?

Yes - will keep pushing on this. I have been feeling my goitre and -

to me - one side seems much more enlarged than other side and guess

which side Dr approached me from and her exam was the lightest of

touches. Don't think she would have felt a thing. I know how sore it

is there and how my prod & push feels and hers felt nothing like that.

Here we do Ultrasounds first. Did you have that first and did it show

anything ( no radiation). I seem to recall a very special test done 30

years ago when goitre first discovered. It may have been nuclear. But

- would you belive - no one told me to have reg checks ! Or that it

may turn nasty later ! I was more of less told it was a teenager thing

and would settle down. Now getting to pre menopause and wondering if

its stirred up again ?

Only blood tests been done are TSH. I get some more results tomorrow.

But I don't think she ordered the antibody one ! Its so frustrating.

There is a good Dr in the city - 200 miles away from me - but its a 2

month wait for appts !

My heart rate does race sometimes. No cause has ever been found. I

even get angina type pains but have passed all heart checks.Some

breathing problems but Dr said I passed that ( hands over head; wait

for face to turn blue) test fine. Sometimes over last years have

almost felt hyper, then hypo next day or hours later. Sort of erratic

highs and lows. Now - feel hypo and just functioning. I scored 91 % in

one of those online quizes !

Hi Aussie. I'm not sure that I have a copy of the ultrasound. I

think I had it done. yes I did, the day after the ER visit, I was

quite sick. I think it just showed the size of the goiter. I

remember the surgeon saying something about ultrasound can't see the

deeper side of the goiter, in toward the throat more. I don't know

what the ultrasound was for. Seems all it could do was to go - yep,

it's a biggee.

I go into the doc now and then when my low back is spasming. She's

the same way, barely touching where it hurts, asking me if it

hurts. At first I thought the light touch was intentional, part of

it being diagnostic. Finally, one time, I told her she had to push

harder to make it hurt. She said " I don't want you to jump through

the ceiling ! " So, I got it, she was trying to make me not have

more pain by her prodding. Sounds like you can have some things to

learn to work with your doc more effectively, like saying " you have

to push harder to feel it, " or " feel it here and push hard. " May be

your dr hasn't been incompetent. The more instruction and

information we give them, the better.

It's interesting the throat soreness has increased. I think I only

had residual stuff going on from the intubation for about 2 weeks.

It's hard to say cuz at the same time I was having to go hypo for

the cancer treatment and that effected my voice, made it lower and

hoarse/gravelly and get quieter if I talked too much. It was a

trip !

Because the cancer was killing my thyroid, it was getting imflammed

and I went through those cycles of hypo and hyper. In hindsight, I

know that now. I'd get hot and sweat for about 4 or 5 hrs. In the

winter, in my shorts, doors open, trying to get cool. Then the

other extreme of in my thermals under a blanket, trying to get

warm. Doc told me some years ago that my body didn't know how to

shut off at night, and so my sleep problems. Now she thinks she was

medicating a whacked thyroid.

I would suppose you have times of heart racing cuz the thyroid is

dumping out hormone and you are hyper for that bit of time.

Breathing - when we're hypo, our palate relaxes and we can have a

kind of sleep apnea. Wonder if it effects daytime breathing.

I'm off to bed OZ Jane, these eyes want to close. keep posting if

I go into the doc now and then when my low back is spasming. She's

the same way, barely touching where it hurts, asking me if it

hurts. At first I thought the light touch was intentional, part of

it being diagnostic. Finally, one time, I told her she had to push

harder to make it hurt. She said " I don't want you to jump through

the ceiling ! " So, I got it, she was trying to make me not have

more pain by her prodding. Sounds like you can have some things to

learn to work with your doc more effectively, like saying " you have

to push harder to feel it, " or " feel it here and push hard. " May be

your dr hasn't been incompetent. The more instruction and

information we give them, the better.

off topic but I always joke if you are not sore when you see the doctor

you will be after you see him. My doctor has a habit of finding places

I did not even know I hurt..
