Guest guest
I believe 1 grain is 1 pill (30mg)... but I might be wrong. My generic Armour I get comes in 30mg tablets. I stick with the word pill because that way I won't confuse myself lol. "My brain is functioning again, I'm just not used to it." -me Armour dosage I hear everyone on here talking abou 1/4 grain, etc dosages. When I looked up the sheet for Armour Thyroid, it said the initial dose was 30mg, then increase 15mg every 2-3 weeks. So which is it? Does this stuff come in grains or mg? I need to know what to ask the doc for tomorrow. Chrissie

Guest guest
Hi, Actually, 1 grain is equal to 60 mg's. So, at taking 30mg's you are taking 1/2 grain of generic Armour. Providing my brain is working today that is... Gossimer > > I believe 1 grain is 1 pill (30mg)... but I might be wrong. My generic Armour I get comes in 30mg tablets. Guest guest
The generic is called Thyroid 30MG TAB URL. URL is the company that makes it. I want to say that the name means United Research Labs, but I could be wrong. Forest Pharm makes Armour Thyroid in dosages from 30MG-240MG. URL makes 30mg only I believe. Vintage Pharmeceuticals as well as TIME-CAP LABS makes generic armour as well. http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/ListImages/1,20242,7969|1,00.html This is the link where I got that info. In Canada the Armour equivilant is in mg and not grains. I believe 1 grain is equal to 60mg of Armour..You may find getting the 30mg or 1/2 grain tablets so it is easier to multidose and adjust your dose if needed.. The old units of measurement were things like grains and drams.. th enew units of measurement is mg, ml etc.. so on older meds or with an older doctor you may find the old writing but the conversion will be used in updated medical information so in a sense both are correct.. Guest guest
Hi Chrissie, I've taken both, currently on Armour as I have insurance from my job that pays for Armour and not the generic. When I was buying my own(no insurance), the generic worked just fine...at the same dosage amount. So, other than the taste being a bit different, they are the same..to me anyways. Guest guest
1/4 grain is 15 mg 1/2 grain is 30 mg 1 grain is 60 mg 2 grain is 120 mg Keep in mind it is cheaper to buy the higher dose pill and use a pillcutter. In the beginning and whenever you're adjusting your doses, it is helpful to have a bottle of 1/4 grain and a bottle of 1/2 grain or 1 grains. Hope this helps, .... Guest guest
One grain of Armour is 60 mg... some of the generics, it's 65. Both contain the same amount of thyroid hormone, 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3 per grain of pill. Most natural thyroid is referred to in grains, but there are some brands, and some docs that go by mg. So a quick list. 15 mg is 1/4 grain 30 mg is 1/2 grain 45 mg is 3/4 grain 60 mg is 1 grain 120 mg is 2 grain .... get it? Synthetics are just as confusing.. they can be listed as mcg or mg. ..050 mg is the same as 50 mcg ..1 mg is the same as 100 mcg ..2 mg is the same as 200 mcg Whenever in doubt, tell us the number and the measurement (grain, mcg or mg) and we'll help you figure it out. Guest guest
I've been on two types other than Armour... and a few months back I got some Armour to stretch my stash of Natural.... Armour dissolves 'cleaner' and tastes a bit sweeter... oh, by cleaner I mean it doesn't have a coating and dissolves all the way. Other than the slight sweet of the Armour, they all taste the same.... I have one more new one to try, it smells the same. I react pretty quickly to change, and so far the only difference I've noticed between the ones that I've tried so far is that the OTC from Nutri-Meds was not as strong as the prescription brands, but then that was pretty much a given. The brand that I've used for most of the last 2 1/2 years since I've been self treating is Time Cap Labs brand. The first year, before Time Caps, I was on Nutri-meds. The next brand that I'll be checking out is Qualitest. When I'm able to order again, if I can't find a source for Time Caps, I'll most likely be going with Thyroid-S. For me, it's a financial thing... I want good quality, but have to look at price, too. For anyone though, if the brand that you are taking is doing the job, don't go swapping brands around, depending on how you react to the different fillers it can throw off your levels and you do need to retest six weeks after a brand change, to see how your body is responding. When I do my unofficial layman's version of testing the different brands... I chart myself through it and journal my reactions. The test that I did between Nutri-Meds and Time Caps took a couple of months to determine... My pathetic body tends to react pretty quickly if a med is much different, even if I am late with a dose my body tells me (remember, I'm the one that doses six times a day). Yahoo has been bouncing my emails this morning... So I'm playing catch up.... now that they are coming through again, it only took five hours to get it going again! arrggghhhhh I'll have to get to the group site to see what I've missed...
