Can anyone tell me what they take for pain such as headaches, flu's,

fevers...

My daughter's Dr. said that she should not take Ibuprofin (advil)

but that Aceteminophen (tylenol) is perfectly safe.

She has come down with a cold/flu and when buying medicine for her

today I was careful to read the labels and consult the pharmacist.

He didn't think that Aceteminophen was very good for the liver. The

medicine I ended up getting didn't have either one in it, but there

is still the matter of aches/pains/fever.

Amber has had headaches since she was a little girl and often takes

Tylenol, now I'm worried and confused.

What do you all take for pain relief?

Kim,

If your doctor has said to use tylenol, then go for it. Pharmacists

can be more concerned about things in general. (I was prescribed

bactrim and coumadin together - doc isn't worried because I get my

INR checked weekly, but the pharmacist nearly freaked!)

Prior to tx, I was always told that tylenol was better than

ibuprofin. I'd watch the amount, certainly. Post-tx, I'm allowed a

maximum of 2 grams per day. That's four extra-strength tylenol pills

in 24 hours. Make sure she's staying hydrated through the

aches/pains/fever - those are all hard on the body by themselves.

I'm sorry to hear that she's suffering so - hopefully the flu part

will pass soon.

Take care,

My doctor gave the same advice, although he recommended that I only take

half the recommended dose of tylenol. Tylenol is processed by the

liver, but from what I've read, it doesn't actually damage it at all

unless the maximum safe dose is exceeded. In other words, it's not like

a little bit of tylenol does a little bit of damage, and a lot does a

lot of damage. To much can cause liver failure, but as long as you stay

well below that threshold, it's really pretty safe.

If you're still concerned about it, you may ask your doctor if she

should take a reduced dose of tylenol, or if the regular dose is OK.

takes aceteminophen - all her doctors told her not to take ibuprofin before the transplant because of the risk of the varices bleeding and, then, after the transplant, because it is hard on the kidneys as are the transplant drugs. Ruth

hello...for pain i smoke marijuana...my liver cannot handle painkillers anymore...last time i was in the hospital i got more sick from the painkillers than i was when i went in...i now have a medical marijuania license to smoke or eat it....the cannoboids actually reduce inflammation...its the only thing that works anymore for pain and a flare up....i recommend it to anyone...try it before you condemn it if nothing else is working...kat

Interesting Kat....so I'm assuiming your Dr. is OK with this since

you have an actual medical license. Would eating it, rather than

smoking it, be more harmful as it must be processed by the liver?

hello.....the problem with the docs is that they do not want to be liable because of the lung disease...the health canada website that deals with medical marijuana has a link to a waiver that u bring to the doc and she/he signs it...says that me or my family will not sue the doc if i develop lung cancer etc...as a result of smoking marijuania...i did go thru a long process of educating the docs....i compiled a lot of research and brought it with me and i would not give up and i got upset with them a few times and even threatened to go to the media as it is my right as a canadian to use medical mj as i am not able to take the standard treatment for crohns...ie steroids....i have an extreme reaction to steriods and would never never take them again...my mom died from steriod complications ...her immune system collasped and she finally had surgery to remove her colon but died because she caught a super bug...from the operation equip...it ate her lungs out from the inside

and died an extremely painful death...we know we sat with her through it...modern medicine could not even touch her pain..she died like a dog....i have completely rejected docs and modern med and treat myself as much as possible with herbs and diet...i have bad days but have all my organs and no major surgery yet!!...i look great most of the time but it is a struggle...actually one of the best research articles i discovered through this newsgroup...that cannoboid alkaloids actually reduce imflammation....and really works for my crohns...so my docs eventually were persuaded or got worn out...but once they were off the hook for the smoking i got the license....my research so far suggests that the only problem with marijuania and the liver seems to be if u had moldy weed...toxins associated with that would show up in the liver...but a good source or growing your own and proper drying etc would take care of that...hope this helps and let me know if i can answer any other

questions....take care kat

You don't take any meds at all for IBD or PSC? Have you ever? How

long ago were you diagnosed? Are you tested at all for liver

functions? If so, have the results improved or worsened?

What type of herbs do you take?

Sorry for all the questions....just curious.
