In a town beside ours the kids are paying $500 to play a sport per season -

most kids play multiple seasons. Thank God we don't live there or my daughter

would not be playing. They are also paying for bussing.

Wow Donna,

I ran into 2 parents last week who have kids going into high school out by

you and they are paying $397.00 for each child. I'm sorry, I think that amount

is rediculous. What could possible be costing that much? We are only paying

$45 for to go to Kindergarten, plus another $43 for milk for the whole

year. We also don't have any bus fees.

I wish I could tell you what to do, but I'm not sure. Hopefully someone might

know the answer.

I think that's an excellent question. I spend less than that to homeschool my

kids and buy all of their supplies and materials.

Donna,

If your children are going to a private school by choice you have to pay. If

the school district is sending you to a private school because they determine

they don't have the appropriate facilities for you then they have to pay.

We pay nothing except for food. I just don't see how under Free and Appropriate

education you can go to public school and be expected to pay. If you can't

afford it your child can't go to school?

I paid $250 for both my boys. 1st and 2nd grade. Ridicules, isn't it? Sad

thing is, on paper we can afford it, but budget-wise, it's a

But my point is that it is supposed to be free and appropriate education, not

free to those who are financially approved. Whether we fall within the catagory

or not financially we can't afford that so what if we can't then our son can't

go to school? No public school is supposed to be free.

Wow! Where do you all live? What exactly are the fees for?? Being

military we've lived in all parts of the country the last 10 yrs and

have never had to pay anything, except for whats on the school

supply lists. I cant imagine having to pay for the kids!My oldest

goes to a private school for the deaf but our local school district

foots the bill for that.

I totally understand your point, and for those of you who live in states where

it is free, count your blessings. Here, it is another way for districts to make

ends meet. Most of the support for our schools comes from real estate taxes.

Recently a school district a few towns over was faced with a referendum to raise

the taxes for the support of the schools. It failed, so fees were increased,

music programs and some sports programs were cut. I'm no expert on the matter,

but it makes little sense to me that some districts have high fees and some have

lower fees, and like you have said, you pay nothing.

Even when I was in school, in the state next to mine, I remember my parents

paying a book rental fee. If for some reason you were not exempted from paying

and you didn't....when you graduated HS, you didn't get a diploma...and this was

in the early 80's. I would love to know how some districts are able to charge

nothing and others have high fees.

....but I'm guessing it covers the cost of the disposable materials

>

THis is what they are here. For workbooks, agendas, supplies like

that. Even in our county it is different school to school. At my

older sons school we had to pay fees like that but at my younger sons

we have never had any fee to pay.

The weirdest fee I have ever paid is this year in middle school----$4

for a heart monitor strap to use in PE. They supply the monitor and

the kid has to buy the strap. At least it is reusable for next

year...haha They are also required to have a specific gym outfit we

had to buy as well.

Simple, it's budget cuts. The districts have less state and federal aide

coming their way. The local taxes can only go so high and people will vote down

budgets that add too much to their taxes. So, the schools can keep only the

core programs that they are required to have. Extra programs (sports, art and

music) are the programs that require the additional funds and so the parents

are asked (required) to pay fees in order for those prigrams tp remain in the

schools. After school sports have an incredible expense just paying for the

required insurance, and that is why many school find even popular sports

programs being cut.

In our district they have stopped bussing children who live within a certain

distance from all the schools. Those kids are now expected to walk to and

from school no matter what the weather. The age for this walking to start is

2nd grade. No aides escorting the kids, they are referred to as " walkers " and in

the elementary schools they are released early with aides watching only

until they leave the school's property.

We have a fund raising organization for our dsitrict called Arts In

Education. It is a parent run group that raises the money needed to fund the art

and

music programs.

Tight money means that we parents will pay for things ... I won't do a

political rant now even though I have the urge. I simply refer to this as my

" thanks to the s " moment. (Pataki, our governor and GW hisself)

Best to all
