Stomach pain is very common on the diet. There is something about the high

fats that irritate the stomach. And, no, it is not something that a child

should have to put up with in order to stay on the diet. For some reason

many keto kids do not get relief from meds such as Zantac or Previcid. Our

daughter, now 9, had very bad stomach pain in the first month of the diet

(age 6). Zantac did not help. We started giving her digestive enzymes

(from the health store) and the pain reduced significantly. We kept her on

the enzymes until during the second year we had weaned her ratio down to

around 1.5. I would highly recommend that you give digestive enzymes.

They help digest the food. It would be easy to give through the g-tube

because they dissolve instantly in water. They come in capsules. Try

starting with 1/2 capsule and give right before a feeding. Yes, your son is

old enough to have them. There are a number of people on this list who have

tried or are using digestive enzymes with success. Two years ago when our

daughter was having severe stomach pain this group suggested the digestive

enzymes. If you want to get more info. on the digestive enzymes you could

search the archives.

RE: 2 year old with extreme irritability

HI...another newbie here....our 2 year old (as of

today!) has been on the keto diet for about 2 weeks.

IN addition to his seizures, he has reflux and feeding

problems that have resulted in a g-tube for most of

his feedings. He also has signicant developmental and

physical delays.

His seizures have been significantly reduced.

However, he is very irritable...lots of crying --a

pained type of cry--and almost impossible to console.

the doctor prescribed prevacid which we have been

using for about a week. It may have helped some, but

not enough to eliminate his discomfort. Interestingly,

he now only wants to be positioned on his

tummy-whether its when he is on the floor or being

held.

We weaned him off most of the seizure meds over a

period of weeks, prior to the hospitalization to start

the diet. Although his seizures continued, he seemed

so much more alert and aware of his environment.

We have wondered if the fact that he is not so

" drugged " from his seizure meds has just made him more

aware of, and less tolerant, of things like pain.

Has anyone out there had any similar experience or

have any recommendations? The fact that he has

reduced the number of seizures is very encouraging,

however, this irritability is no way for any of us to

live!

Thanks

Ann,

It is usually reflux or constipation. The preference for the tummy

position sounds like reflux. There is also ketones too high, but that

also has panting, red cheeks, etc.

After my daughter was weaned from tegretol she had to quit the choir

because of the pain in her ears. Sirens scare her to death. She also

doesn't like scary rides the way she used to. Yes, we have had similar

experience with drugs. Solution? Wish I knew.
