Guest guest
Thanks, Jane. When I first got into online stuff it was to run a BBS (Computer Bulletin Board Service), it's what the Internet was before it grew up like it is today. The purpose of the board was to promote my dad's first patented invention and was called Deal$ and Dollar$. To tie me in to the whole project and give it continuity I picked my screen name from dad's patent... Topper Tilt was the name of his gadget... I became Topper. I have to share the FUNNY part of the history.... We figured that the sysop (system operator) of the board should be a guy. After all, computer type people were mostly men, right? So I came up with a caricature of a guy with red hair and a beard, like my dad, that was in a green leprechauny type outfit with a green top hat.... Topper. We had a couple hundred people on the board (it was actually a set up a lot like a yahoo group, BBSs were) any way... the questions started coming within a few weeks of going online..... Topper.... are you a girl, or are you gay? Over and over and over again... they said my writing style wasn't very masculine.. that I had to be one or the other... I wasn't a plain ole guy... So... One fateful day I 'came out of the closet' and confessed to not only being female... but that I was in my mid thirties and single.... Subscriptions and free access membership shot through the roof.. EVERYONE had to come check out the BBS that was being run by a girl!!! hehehehe That was the fall of '94. I think it was 2000 or 2001 when I added the () to my sig... there were more and more Topper's online.... so I wanted to single myself out... and as I got into the groups it became clear that too many didn't know what I was, from the name Topper... so adding the made it clear that I was female.... BTW. Even though the BBS was shut down in '97 I still have all the screens and such that I designed for it as well as all the message archives on CD... One day I'll install it all again just for the fun of it.... I kept a copy of Win 95 just in case it won't run on 98.. pretty sure it won't run on XP..... ..... the good ole days.... hehehehe Today.... I have to get our projects done.... No more putting things off until tomorrow... cuz things can happen all to quickly. The group home page was just one of the things on the list..... now to get busy with the others.... Guest guest
that's a cool story Topper. btw, how do you tell if you have problems with iodine?? i personally hate the taste of iodized salt as it tastes metallic to me, but i'll eat kosher salt (no iodine). i would think that every thyroid patient is iodine deficient... however i have never noticed a problem. hmm... interesting. i have noticed that after switching to an organic/mostly vegan/vegetarian diet i feel lots better. my husband jokingly calls me a meatatarian because i still eat meat occasionally lol. i do notice a difference in the way i feel since i cut out foods with iodized salt. mostly because the iodized stuff is in all the cheap mass produced crap food (i can't think of a better description to call it ). i have no problem with people who eat it... truth is it would be a lot cheaper if i could but hey... oh well. he also jokes and says i'll be the first vegan who doesn't want to be lol... truth is, he's probably right. andrea Re: OT - How 'Topper' came to be.. short version Thanks, Jane. Guest guest
oh and for those of you that can't have salt... vinegar is a good supplement... because it tastes salty in foods. different types of vinegars also taste different ways. and you can use vinegar on your hair to take out that green chlorine wash before a shampoo... andrea.
