Hi all.

A good friend of ours has Crohns and started SCD just over 2 months

ago after we *strongly* suggested it. Recently things had been under

control, but for the past 4 days she has had nausea, gas, pain,

diarrhea and a lot of grumblings. Her diet has been very basic

throughout this timeframe.

Could this be die-off or is it most likely just a bad flare up?

People talk about die-off on this list all the time, but on

the " adult-focused " list she's on, no one talks about it at all.

Could an adult who's experienced it first-hand please tell us if

that's what it feels like? She's really uncomfortable...

Thanks so much,

mom to asd daughter, 4, scd 10/26/04

More information:

She's been eating mostly boiled & roasted chicken with occasional

grilled steak and fish, well cooked carrots, spinach, asparagus,

green beans, apple cider and SCD cow milk yogurt, ripe bananas,

cheddar cheese, eggs, occasional weak coffee with milk and Lacteze,

weak green tea, sparkling water. 8 days ago, she had a couple almond

flour cookies.

The flare - or whatever it was - seems to have lasted about 5 days.

She hasn't had any episodes so far this morning so thinks (hopes!)

she may be coming out of it...

Any idea if this is a flare or die-off?

I think she should drop the milk with lacteze in the coffee.

I honestly don't know anything about green tea. I've never looked

into the allowed teas because my boys hate tea.

Nothing else you listed seemed out of the ordinary.

It sounds like the three month flare some people get; Elaine

mentions it in the book. (3 mos being the average but can happen at

any time)

If things start to flare up again she should look at any new foods

she added relatively recently. Like the almond flour cookies. Also

if she has been having green tea all along it may not be the cause

of trouble but if things continue (ie the gas, diarrhea) she may

want to leave it out for a while. The green tea should be limited

to two cups/day.

Also the lactaid drps should only be used for heavy cream, there is

too much lactose in milk. It should be treated with the drops 24

hours prior to use and just a little used to whiten coffee up to a

max of two cups of coffee/day.
