Her son finally got the waiver at age 7, and she had a very difficult time finding a program that would work with him. They said he was too old. The waiver in the US is a government-funded program that provides funds for therapy for various disabilities, for any that don't know. Not all states, or counties within states, have them. Southern Ontario boasts none of these things. :-( There was a story recently in the Welland paper about a Welland family whose son was put on the waiting-list at age 4 for government-funded IBI. Guest guest Posted January 5, 2003 Report Share Posted January 5, 2003 we do love it here - despite all of our bitching about what a hole it is ;o) certainly when we consider the distances those in southern ontario have to drive to breathe in clean air and swim in clear lakes we feel very fortunate. we spend alot of time camping at quetico park which is about an hour and a half away from here. inevitably every year we meet torontonians or 905ers out there who have planned this trip for years and drove 24 hours to get there!! probably the biggest advantage is the cost of living. we can live very comfortably here on one salary. we could never live on one income in the big smoke! and then of course there is access to services. the two latest children to start the IBI program here moved here from southern ontario where they would have aged out on the waiting list. their families moved here because there were openings their children could just walk right in to. i am glad you like thunder bay! if you ever venture up north again look us up! michelle mg mg > 68 is the warmest we ever put our thermostat to as well! we usually keep it between 60 and 65. those americans don't know what cold is do they jacquie!!! > michelle mg True, true. <grin> I remember moving to Niagara from cottage country, and being bewildered when everyone bitched about how cold it was and how bad the snow...-5c with slush falling from the sky. But THAT SAID... One cloudy day in September 1995, I took a plane from Toronto to Thunder Bay. I wore my shorts. RIGHT. LOL. Oh god, it was awful! I nearly froze in the taxi to the hotel... I was travelling up there for a week doing college fairs with other ontario college PR reps. We took a bus from Thunder Bay and did the whole northern loop from Thunder Bay out to Wawa, Kap, Chapleau, and back to the Sault... and at every damn place I wore the same cardigan over my flimsy Niagara business suit! :-P I was NOT prepared. Just an aside: at one of the little towns, I can't remember which one, I had a student helping me with my display. We got to talking, and she said how she and her mom would make a day trip into Thunder Bay to buy school clothes every year, or just go shopping. Four hours to drive there, four hours home. ONE DAY. Now, I was living in the Niagara Peninsula at that time, and just stared at her openmouthed. I said, " Honey, if *I* have to drive four hours to get somewhere, I'm staying for a WEEK! " And we both stared at each other in shock, each thinking, " what - are you CRAZY?! " Talk about culture shock! I loved it up there, though. It was the first time I'd ever been so far north. My three-bedroom three-bath 1200sq ft townhouse would sell for about $158,000 here -- that's what the neighbors on either side just sold their smaller models for. I said that tonight to the kids that we should move to Thunder Bay and my daughter said OK, said he would have to see it first. It's a long pissy story, but the gist of it is that when Marc got off the boats his parents pressured him to take a job here and move back here -- this is where he grew up. They promised all sorts of things, like how much help they'd be with ...they did not babysit for him ONCE before THEY moved away.
