Guest guest
- That's sort of where we began thinking about a conductive aid. Aubrie shows small improvement on the testing in the booth. From an audiologist point of view, it's not enough improvement to warrant a change. But given all the stuff our kids have to deal with, I think a small improvement in any area can be critical. I also find it very confusing figuring out what to do. I haven't even gotten so far as to try out the conductive aid on a loaner basis. I can't remember how I was talked out of it last year, but now I find myself reconsidering. Guest guest
, Michele, Sorry to be asking this again. I am still confused. are hearing aids different from conductive aid that you are talking about. is conductive aid - BAHA. we have phonak digital hearing aids. i too want to make things easier for my daughter. she did pretty good with bone conduction test. does ok with hearing aids too. so confusing. Michele, we are in chicago. so we go to Children's memorial in downtown. Dr. Young is the ENT there. No we dont get any services from project reach.may be I should look into that. we had some evals done through Ei. but did not get an auditory verbal therapist from them. so we go to a private practitioner. (expensive - insurance does not pay well for out of network.) Rita. > > - > That's sort of where we began thinking about a conductive aid. Guest guest
Rita, We have the same hearing aids. BAHA is bone anchored hearing aid. It can be used with a headband and the hearing device is attached to it and sits on the bone. This type will then bypass the middle ear. Here is a web site for you to go to. www.entific.com Michele, The audiologist was telling me that 30-35 db is good given her loss is 60-70 db with out aids. I agree, but I then told them that she has so many other issues that I feel the extra 15-20 db would be good now. If she did not have the vision, balance and sensory issues and only the hearing loss, I would probably drop the issue. We are thinking of making the trip to Carle clinic to see what they say. Maybe we need to go at the same time and we can both present our cases at the same time. I also don't really understand why they would tell us to consider this when she is old enough to have the surgery. Bad thing is I really don't have time to deal with all of this right now. We just found out there is something going on with her stomach and intestines and are waiting for the doctor to call back and her ENT is sending her to a pulmonologist in IA for a second opinion and another sweat test for cystic fibrosis. But I need answers on the hearing stuff as well. It never ends. Mom to 3 yrs CHARGE --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Guest guest
Rita- The BAHA is bone-anchored. But there is a conductive hearing aid that is just worn on a headband -- no surgery. Of course, the quality there is poorer because you have it slipping etc. The bone-anchored goes directly into the bone -- ta da. We also have the phonak digital aids. They are incredibly wonderful. Aubrie got near perfect in the booth for the first time ever with them. Problem for her is that she is only hearing perfectly some of the time. My sense is that with a conductive aid, she'd hear perfectly all of time -- regardless of fluid, sinus issues, etc. However, it is a huge process and not one that any dr will put us through willy-nilly. I don't remember how old your child is -- I'm sorry! And I also don't remember her(?) vision levels. Project Reach is a must for any child with CHARGE - in my opinion. Do you know how to reach them? http://project-reach-illinois.org/ The IL School for the Deaf and the IL School for the Blind both have parent-infant institutes the summer. They are about one week long. It is an intense time -- families stay on campus. Kids get intense evaluations in all domains and parents get loads of info. I never went cuz I just couldn't then -- you know, just not a priority at the time. But I'm here to tell you that it's something I wish I'd done and I'd encourage any IL families to do if you can find a way. This is a link for ISVI. http://morgan.k12.il.us/isvi/Parent-Infant%20Institute.htm I couldn't find a link for ISD's institute. Here's their homepage. You could call for more info. http://morgan.k12.il.us/isd/ I know both are in June Michele W mom to Aubrie 8 yrs CHARGE, 14 yrs and wife to DJ Re: Questions about BAHA , Michele, Sorry to be asking this again.
